The BCS is a travas-sham-mockery!

What a joke. Think about this:

LSU is killing Arkansas. So, LSU wins the SEC West. Therefore, LSU plays Georgia in the SEC Championship.

Alabama will likely kill Auburn tomorrow. But, Ala lost to LSU, so, they do not play in the SEC Championship.

Alabama is #2 in the BCS and will not fall after beating Auburn. Then, they are done with their season and will have punched their ticket for the BCS Championship as the #2 team.

Now, LSU, for beating everyone, has to play in the SEC Championship game against a very hot Georgia. LSU could lose. LSU could suffer injuries. A lot could happen. It is possible that LSU loses to Georgia and, then drops from the #1 position.

How in the hell do you justify this??? Alabama gets a benefit from losing to LSU b/c they do not have to play that extra game. WTF?

It is also mathematically possible for LSU to lose to Georgia in the SEC Championship game and still only drop to #2. That would likely bump Alabama to #1. But, LSU beat Alabama, so, WTF???

This is bullshit. It is possible to lose your conference championship and still play for the national title. Likewise, it is possible to not even qualify for your conference championship and still play for the national title.

Come on, man!

Dude the horse is dead already. College football needs a playoff system or it doesn’t work. On some occasions you get 2 unbeaten teams with no others and then it works.

My Tigers have a history of insane games in the Iron Bowl and nothing thus far in 2011 leads me to believe it will be anything other than a Bama Track Meet.

There have been questionable results in the past, but, the scenario this year is obscene.

No doubt this year is nuts.

When I look at these four teams today: LSU, Bama, Ark and Georgia. Who could beat them other than each other? Ok. St maybe if they can recover from the mental meltdown of losing to an unranked team. Certainly no Big 10, ACC or Big East team. Oklahoma is so soft it’s hilarious, vintage Stoops coaching problems, not athletes as he has a stable of stallions.

Also, it is statistically possible for OkSt. to pass Bama even with an Auburn win. It ain’t over yet!

I think Oregon has a very good shot of beating LSU and would beat Ark, Georgia and even Bama. Remember, in their first meeting, James got hurt and the D is a completely different team now. I am not saying Oregon should be in the Championship Game, just that I think they are a team that could beat those SEC teams. Virginia Tech is playing really, really well. Still, they would need the perfect game and some mistakes to be LSU or Bama. I think they could beat Ark. Maybe.

College Football does have a playoff. James Madison takes on Western Kentucky tomorrow at noon EST on ESPNU.

Funny how one of the reasons the NCAA says they dont want a playoff is the student-athlete will miss school, but they just expanded the FCS Playoffs from 8 teams to 20

Just curious who you think the best 2 teams in football are this year? Only pick 2.

Just curious who you think the best 2 teams in football are this year? Only pick 2.

I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t. I think LSU is the best team in the country. After that, I don’t know.

But, that is not my point. Just look at it this way: Bama wins tomorrow and they punch their ticket to the BCS Championship Game. But, LSU, by beating Bama, has to go play another game (SEC Championship against Georgia) and could lose, could sustain injuries, etc. It doesn’t make sense!

I know that’s not your point. But I think a majority would agree that currently Alabama is the best of the 1-loss teams. OSU was beat by an unranked team. Sorry, you don’t deserve a shot. VT (spanked at home by Clemson) has an argument along with Stanford (loss by 23 to Oregon). But you look at their competition week in and week out and I have a hard time seeing how they are superior to Alabama. Alabama loss by 3, in OT to the #1 team. In my book, that makes the case. They have the 1 loss by the smallest margin, to the best team. Therefore, the BCS has it right (for now). It is projecting the best 2 teams for the title. We might not agree how it is derived, but the purpose of the BCS is to pit the best two teams against each other.

To your point: Agreed that is sucks for LSU. This scenario is partially why I don’t like a playoff system. If we assume that a playoff system would include at least 8 teams, then why would LSU play their starters in the SEC championship. Even with a loss, they would still be a 1 loss team and in the playoffs. We frequently see this in NCAA basketball. You also see this in the NFL. The end of the regular season or conference tournament becomes a joke except for those on the bubble.

I also think this is the problem with a +1 system. LSU would once again have to prove its worth just to have a chance to a play another 1 or 2 loss teams. And goodness, imagine the top 2 were undefeated. Both would have to play 1 loss teams in hopes of meeting each other. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Look, I don’t think the BCS is the perfect system, I just don’t have as much of a problem with it. I also don’t think a playoff or a +1 system is without major flaws. In some years, we would be having this exact discussion, complaining about the the playoffs, etc.

–Note: All is the from a diehard Auburn fan who would love to beat Alabama tomorrow and is not the least upset about what happened in 2004.

Just curious who you think the best 2 teams in football are this year? Only pick 2.

LSU and Mount Union.

My favorite line about the BCS was something like this: “Thank goodness the NFL doesn’t doesn’t use the BCS or the reigning Super Bowl Champions would never have had a shot!”

That was one of the best, most exciting Super Bowl runs in years! Right up there with the year the Steelers won the Super Bowl as a willd card team.

That is how sports SHOULD be played! What is happening this year makes a mockery of sports. Period.

Just for the sake of argument - how do you know Alabama is the best 1-loss team in the country? How do you KNOW they are better than Stanford? How are you so CERTAIN they are better than VT?

Okie State lost on the road the day after their long-time women’s b-ball coach died in the plan crash. Are you POSITIVE that did not cause the loss?

Oh, btw, we DO have another undefeated team - Houston. Why don’t they get a shot?

You can do better than that…

If we have a playoff system, how do we really know anything other than the outcome of the games played. How do you KNOW the 2010 Packers would beat the Saints in the playoffs. How are you so CERTAIN they were better New England if they played in January?

Your argument still remains under a playoff system.

Sure playoffs are exciting. But that is not the goal of the BCS or playoffs. They are designed to pit the best two teams against one another. Entertainment is a by product. Sorry, playoffs have a major flaw when a team with a losing record Seattle has a chance to play but a team like the Bucs or Giants are sitting home. Especially when the Bucs and Giants beat Seattle in the regular season. That’s like making the case that the Big East champ should by in the playoffs while a one loss SEC team sits at home.

Under a playoff system, you allow the teams to settle the matter on the field. You do not rely on frick’n computers to tell you who should win.

In the NFL, we have 32 teams. Conferences and divisions play one another, then play each other. At least the divisions play one another so we have some clue about the strength of each. In college, with so many teams/conference/divisions, we have virtually no overlap. You simply cannot say that one 1-loss team in conference A is the same as one 1-loss team in conference B.

Hell, why don’t we just skip the games and let EA Sports simulate the games? Seriously, how is that any different than allowing computers to decide who gets to play?

EDIT TO ADD: You act like playoffs in college could/would never work. March Madness is the greatest time of the year. There is your de facto evidence that a playoff system is better.

Western Kentucky made the move to FBS two seasons ago. JMU is playing Eastern Kentucky. But you are correct; most so called football fans don’t even pay attention to the FCS (1-AA) playoffs and they are very exciting to watch.

woops
.

In other news, the FCS TOURNAMENT starts today.

In other news, the FCS TOURNAMENT starts today.

As it should be. Amazing how those student-athletes are able to play in a … Gasp … Playoff system!

The BCS turns college football into a judged event, not unlike figure skating…blechh.

Even the computer rankings have their basis in human “judgements” about who should be better than who, and all the inherent biases of that sort of system

Exciting FCS game on ESPNU today JMU wins on Field Goal into 30+ mph wind with 1 second left in the game. The lower half has four games next week with four CAA teams in it and one in the upper half. I hate to use the comarasion but the CAA is the sec of the FCS.

This is about the smoothest year in recent memory. Unless someone thinks Houston is the best team in the nation then we will have the best team in the national championship game. Isn’t that what is important, to have the best team playing in the championship game?
