Hmm. How much is a costco membership nowadays? Any long term fees or that kinda thing?
I think it’s about $50/year if I remember correctly. My wife and I just joined, partly to fulfill our Greek Yogurt addiction in what we have convinced ourselves is a cheaper way. Although, EVERY time we go to Costco, we spend well over $100.
Speaking of how freaking expensive greek yogurt is compared to normal yogurt, does anybody know WHY?!?!
Mainly the extra protein, but also the live cultures that help with digestion. I’ve found that taking it every other day vastly reduces my, ahem, “extraneous protein outgassing”. For this reason, my wife has specifically asked me to keep eating it. Seriously. Sad but true.
As a Greek, I have a little bit of a bias towards Greek yogurt…but Fage is the way to go if you eat any. I tried that knock off yoplait stuff once and couldn’t stand it.
Put some strawberry preserves or honey and granola on it and it’s an awesome desert!
Everyone that I know who has tried Chobani has not gone back to Fage or any other Greek yogurt for that matter. It has both better texture as well as taste. We buy it at Wegman’s or BJ’s shoppers club for $4.99/quart. Fage here costs ~ $7.00/quart.
Of course, I’ve been spoiled–my mom hopped on the Greek Yogurt train a couple years ago because she used it as the active culture for our homemade yogurt. Of course, I decided that as good as the homemade yogurt was, you couldn’t beat the convenience and portability of the little chobani containers and thus I was more likely to eat the chobani.
But their Chobani pack all have the “fruit” in the bottom. Doesn’t even taste like fruit. I bought one of those boxes and won’t be buying another. The Fage is probably my least favorite to eat plain, but somewhat palatable when you mix things in.
Our local supplies typically get wiped out the day of delivery … with the lone exception of the “Plain” variety which sits on the shelf for days on end, completely undisturbed. So, that’s what I buy. I buy the bulk container. Then, I throw in whatever sustinence I can find to make that god-awful sludge semi-palatable. Sometimes it’s fresh fruit - sometimes it’s bacon grease. Doesn’t matter. It’s a super food. I’m eating healthy regardless of what I sfuff into it …. right!?
I buy the plain stuff then put whipped cream on it.

YMMV

Chobani or Stonyfield. Yoplait just adds dried milk powder or something to normal yogurt.
I like “normal” (non Greek) yogurt better though.
greek yogurt is just regular yogurt that has been strained. It has less whey (the clearish yellow liquid stuff). Buy regular yogurt and strain it in a colander with a coffee filter and you have greek yogurt. Technically it’s less nutritious than regular yogurt because there is less whey, which is where a lot of the nutrients are. But it has less carbs, more protein per oz than regular yogurt so people say it’s better for you.

so really if you aren’t concerned with carbs the regular yogurt would be a better option?
I guess more specifically my question is, do the OTHER nutrients in the whey outweigh (NPI) the additional carb load?
