For me, it is the excitement of our dog when she sees us, especially after she has a walk. When my wife takes our dogs for a walk, the young one (18 ish months) will always come running into my study when she gets back into the house. I hear the door open and then hear her little paws on the floor as she runs to find me. She is so excited and happy and it makes me smile every single time.
our two year old grandson when he laughs and giggles when you play with him. I have never met a kid who laughs so much! It is pure unabashed joy! I’m smiling just writing this.
I get up early every morning and read for 2 hours, with coffee on a coffee warmer and my golden sitting beside me. In the warm weather, we do the same, sitting outside. I put out peanuts and we have 3 chipmunks and 6 Blue Jays come in the yard to eat, with my dog just watching.
I do absolutely everything to avoid any interruption to that morning ritual.
I have 4 grandkids … 1, 2, 7 and 10. Each cheers me up no matter what. Even more than my dogs.
But also … a hard bike ride. It doesn’t so much cheer me up directly as it clears the sludge, which leads to me being cheered up.
I’m either going to the pump track or the pickleball court this afternoon with the 10 year old. His choice. I don’t care which. It will be the highpoint of my day (first day back to work from vacation).
My youngest is just learning to say “I love you, daddy”. It’s pretty hard to top that.
The smell of my daughter’s hair when she runs and jumps at me for a hug when I get home.
Spring has arrived and we have been having sunny t shirt weather. Getting up in the morning and going for a sunrise run on the water front with no music is incredible.
My dog when, at the end of the day, she jumps on the bed, wedges herself between my wife and I then rolls over and demands belly rubs, and the subsequent loud, deep exhale of relaxation she lets out always makes me smile.
Kids and dogs for sure but I also build and fly model aircraft, putting a plane I’ve built through it paces can instantly change a rough day into a good one.
