Thanks Slowman: Ironman LP...time to rumble :-)

Hey fellow posters on ST. We’re just hitting 5 am here in Lake Placid race morning and I am putting away my breakfast and my first real coffee in 2 weeks (zero caffeine 2 week taper)

I just wanted to thank everyone on ST who helped me getting to the start line. It truly has been a long journey and I wrote about it here:

http://www.xtri.com/features_display.aspx?riIDReport=4161&CAT=21&xref=xx

Specifically on ST a few folks to thank: Slowman for hosting us at his “house” The late Doug Stern for all the help in the swim, as well as Dr. Tommy for taking my swim apart last fall Jana and Ewen my fellow participants in the 100 days of running in a row this past winter All the "virtual Campers in the Xmas and Easter Camps The “Casa Desertdude” crew and specifically Cousin Elwood, my hosts from the Wildflower trip Murphy’s Law for continuously smacking me and giving me the confidence to run faster in training…maybe it will translate to a fast run split! Mike and Darcy at Infinite, Herbert while he was at QR and Speedy at Rolling Thunder
I’ll try and race strong, hard and fair. There are many of us out here. Have fun tracking the boys and girls at Ironmanlive.com. Fleck is going to be out there as an Ironmanlive spotter, so he told us to be nice to him, or he’ll call us out on the live streaming video that the spotters are supposed to be providing (hopefully the technology works…).

It feels like Xmas morning. i have the anticipation and fear of a newbie even though this is my 15th Ironman. I guess knowing what the 500 lbs gorilla feels like 20 miles into the run when he junps on your back for a 6 mile ride is reason for fear. I hope to be logging on tonite to tell you that I won the battle with the gorilla. Konaexpress, when you read this…and you will, we all hope that you’ll be back next year flying through the gorge past Whiteface and putting down a time that starts with the digit NINE!

thanks

Dev

OK, I am back and can say that I am a fifteen time Ironman finisher. I posted this quick report on Murphy’s Law thread, but wanted to post on my own

Guys. I achieved my 2 main goals of finishing with no injuries, no medical tent and sub 6 min T1+T2. The swim was horrible. I don’t know what I was doing out there, but I got banged up a lot and just cruised in after a while. Also lost my watch. As you can see, T1 was relatively fast. On the bike, first loop was minimal wind and although you guys might think it was a fade, it was a very even effort. The wind really kicked up hard on loop 2 and I just kept the effort the same…no breathing hard and no burn in the legs till the final 12 miles of the bike. Despite what the clock says on the positive split on the bike I passed a ton of guys on loop 2 so guys were getting blown backway to slower loop 2 times. Came in at 5:28 and I think it was a top 50 bike split which is a first time ever for me. Must be all the huge bike weeks I tried to cram in to make up for missing bike training on 10-12 days stints on business travel in China and Japan this winter/spring.

Onto the run, I though I was going to put down a a 3:3x. I had no watch so I was just going on perceived effort, going at conversation pace. I think first loop was around 1:45 and I was hoping to close it off with a 1:50ish, but on the hills into town, I just had no snap in my legs…I was not going slowly, just no stride length. I ended up with a 62nd overall and even with the women’s race that was my best position by over 40 places. It also got hot on the run which hurt a lot of guys, but that did not seem to bother me (as most of you know). Anyway, that makes it FOUR IRONMANS IN A ROW with 3:42-3:43 run splits…I might not be fast, but give the turtle credit for consistency

Anyway, my nutrition was good. Took in 2300 cals from infinit on the bike, plus another 400 on the run. Aside from that also had a powerbar and gel on the bike and ~7 gels on the run, gatorade, coke coke coke. Not sure how much I took in on the run but I think between the bike and run, I was easily over 3600 calories which works out to 360 cals per hour. No stomach issues today…Folan and Darcy (Infinit Canada) rock.

Now the family is about to hit the sack, so I am heading out to cheer the midnight finishers…tomorrow morning, sign up for Ironman LP 2007 with KonaExpress, have a GIANT ice cream at Stewarts, and also drop off my documentation at the Lake Placid court, pleading for a reduction from a March speeding ticket…hopefully they drop it.

I LOVE THIS TOWN…THIS RACE IS AMAZING. THERE IS A PIECE OF MY SOUL ON THE TARMAC FROM WILMINGTON TO LAKE PLACID…I HAVE SOARED ON THIS STRETCH LIKE TODAY AND GOTTEN BEATEN BACKWARDS BY THE WHITEFACE GODS THERE!

If you have not ever done this race, try it just once.

To Graham Fraser and his NAS team THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You built a stadium that we the atheltes get to play in. On this one day a year, you can feel like Tom Brady winning the superbowl, whether you are first or last…everyone gets the same treatment.

thanks for the cheers.

Dev

I feel like I’m watching the Oscars!

Heart-felt congrats on a solid race, Dev.

great job dev…

so lake placid again next year? we will make it a smack down you and me… i really hope to be at the start for a revenge of my 11h40ish of many years ago…

Hi Paulo, I know about thanking all these dudes, but it takes a village to raise a child (and in my heart, I a child in an adult’s body…) and all these folks really helped me…I wanted to thank them before I started the race regardless of outcome. Thanks for the good words

Dev,

Congrats on a very solid finish! Looks like you had a great day all around, including T1 & T2

Ken

I had fun watching you today Dev. You were too quick for my camera (it was more fun heckling you anyway) when you were hammering up “Mama Bear” out of the saddle instead of staying aero.

Congratulations on your 62nd place. It was certainly warm out on the run and quite calm (no breeze), way to stay strong.

Congrats on a great race Dev!

it was great seeing you at LP Tri_Yoda
I hope your racing goes well this summer with the new ride
It was a great day for a race.

Thom

hey Dev,
congrats on a great race out there!

, and thanks for cheering us on while me and Pady were running together for loop1.

Dev

Great job! Congrats

awesome job! congrats!

Dev, well done. Another very solid race.

Tom

ps perhaps we should cancel our ride up to Apex and go to the pool for another lesson???

Dev-I’m so happy to hear about your great race. You will never know the inspiration that you have given me along with the information to succeed. Thanks, again.

Dr. Tommy, frankly the swim needs some major work. 62 minutes is ridculously slow. I have to say, I was hoping for a 58, but after getting beat up a bit early in the game, I kinda lost my componsure. And for the final 2K I was passing people continuously. We’ll have to fix that for next year…maybe we can do the Apex ascent as well as the swim lesson. You could also give me 10 year old some swim lessons. He has no business learning anything about this sport from me!

Guys, thanks for the good words! I can’t wait till my buddy Konaexpress is back in 2008 and puts down a finish time that starts with 9. It was really tough for the guy to watch from the sidelines. If you thought I was obsessed and wrapped my life around doing triathlon, Konaexpress’ life is all about doing FULL IRONMANS!

And I think next year, the official taper program is Peterborough Half Ironman 2 weeks out and Carleton Place 2K swim-90K bike Aquabike 1 week out. Seems to have worked reasonably well…why go hard in training, when you can enter a race and get a time that goes up on sportstats for your effort

Congrats Dev,
That is a big achievement for sure.

Herbert

KS, I think the key to a good T1+T2 time is mandatory visit to a Japanese temple :-). Herbert, again, thanks for your support in the past…much appreciated. By the way, your buddy Dave Nerrow, fresh off their RAAM escapade blew by me like freight train 80K into the bike. When I noticed that it was him, I “spiked my power” and surged up to him to high 5 him to tell him that I was a huge fan of their studly RAAM exploits!

Dev

OK, I don’t feel too bad…my bike positive split was 14 minutes, but even Dave Nerrow was 16 min positive split:

Great race Dev!

Your posts have helped me become a better triathlete and finish my first 1/2 at Peterborough this year.

Keep passing the wisdom along so when I’m ready to tackle IMLP I’ll have volumes to study off of!

Congrats on 62nd overall, that’s awesome!!!

Damn Dev, you are one studly dude. Congrats on a great race! It was awesome watching you come in. Maybe there is hope for me yet!
