THANK YOU FOR ALL THE REPLIES - Just got the Cervelo P2C - Any tips in getting Ready to compete?

Just got home from purchasing the Cervelo P2C. Am itching to ride, but have to prepare these darn tax returns (public accounting). Any of you out there that may be willing to share some ideas on how to prepare for Tris? Want to do the Half next April and some shorties between now and then.

Help, am totally committed now that I spent the dough.

Ride the hell out of her! If you break or wear out 3 chains by next spring - you are ready … If you start shopping tires soon at Probikekit.com, that is a good sign. If you start using chamois cream - also good.

Simple as that, really.

Thanks…was looking for a little more detail. Will take what I can get.

You really make me dislike being young and with a small disposable income. I’ve started saving for a $3000 bike which I should have in just short of 2 years.

But now that you’ve got the bike. Ride hard more than you think you should. Run a lot. Get a swim coach.

Runless:

Only two years…I have been looking into the bike for about 4.5 years…am glad it took me this long as the technology became cheaper and was able to get something really good (it seems)…hang in there. You will only benefit from the technology advancement and price reduction.

Your post is a little vague, but I’ll give a few tips. Keep in mind I have no idea what your current fitness level is, what your goals are for the race (to finish or to be competivie), how much time you have to train, etc.

For the half iron distance, you need to be swimming a minimum of 6,000 a week, biking at bare minimum 150 miles a week, and running 40 a week. Doing that for a few months leading up to the race will get you to the finish line.

Not necessary to get a coach. Costs a lot of money. Read a lot (there’s good stuff here on slowtwitch once you get past the egos). When you read take everything with a grain of salt and always ask who the main audience is of the thing you’re reading. For instance, if you are reading something recommending 6 hour bike rides, remember that is not necessary for your half iron racing (6 hour rides would be aimed at ironman length racing).

Training is pretty simple. Put in the time and you’ll get faster. There aren’t any shortcuts.

Oh, one thing that has helped me a ton: in January I decided to do one brick a week all year. It really sucked the first month, but now, in July, I am having my best run splits ever. Bricks are key. Do them frequently. Even if the run is only 30 minutes after your ride, you will reap huge benefits from bricking.

Thank you for the reply. Currently I need to cut about 35 lbs…will do this with the next 1.5 to 2 months. Have an extremely strong running background. As an example, ran the LA Marathon on 1 month 3 weeks training and my chip time was 3:35:32, after laying on the side of the road on mile 17…hit the wall for a minute but fought through it. I believe the running background will help me on the Bike, it is the swim that I need help in…am a strong swimmer but need a workout.

I don’t think finishing will be a problem for me…I just want to put in a good performance and do the trainning needed to do good while doing all three events. Am commited and will spend the time needed…back to the LA marathon that I completed…I trained while working 40 plus hours and full time student…

Anyone what to help by giving up some of their workouts for all events? hope that is not too much info…and I do not mean to stroke myself.

Here is my schedule this week. This week is my last big week before a week long taper to my A race. So I’m doing a lot this week.

Monday AM: Masters swim
Monday PM: easy

Tuesday PM: Run interval day

Wednesday AM: easy run
Wednesday PM: tempo/hard ride

Thursday AM: Masters
Thursday PM: Tempo run

Friday AM: easy run
Friday PM: easy ride

Saturday AM: Brick
This is my key workout for the week. For the half iron distance, I build up to a 3 hour bike and a 1.5 hour run
Saturday PM: open water easy recovery swim

Sunday: Long run

This is my schedule this week. I’ve been trying to run every day and do a weekly brick. As far as getting ideas for swimming, if you aren’t swimming with a masters group, I’d recommend picking up Gale Bernharts “Swim workouts for triathletes.” you can find it on amazon.com. Its a great book full of 100 or so swim workouts.

Another tip: ride with roadies. You’ll get much better riding with roadies than you ever will riding alone.

Thanks will be a good start.

Here is an idea. “TRAIN”

Tifreak:

You just hit the nail on the head…my only question is how? I would love just to go out and hit the pavement, pedals, and water. Desire I have…but wanna be efficient and get the best out of my time spent training.

Your reply indicates that you have some good regiments…please share.

Well geez… if you own a Cervelo… what’s the need to prepare!?

Seriously… TRAIN. OFTEN. CONSISTENTLY.

Are you REALLY “totally committed”? Prove it!
