Texas is challenging the teaching of evolution again.

This is the same state where Bill Nye was recently booed for saying the moon reflected the light of the sun and not a light source:
Bill Nye, the harmless children’s edu-tainer known as “The Science Guy,” managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun. As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own. But don’t tell that to the good people of Waco, who were “visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence,” according to the Waco Tribune.

Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College’s Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption. But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: “God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector. At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled “We believe in God!” and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they’d always suspected.

This story originally appeared in the Waco Tribune, but the newspaper has mysteriously pulled its story from the online version, presumably to avoid further embarrassment.

The map is not correct. It still shows Texas as part of the United States, which will be sold to Mexico in exchange for a case of Corona sometime around 2025.

My husband and I are planning to move south in a couple years and he has mentioned Austin as a possibility. With news like this I’m honestly not sure I can live in the state.

in that case please stay where you are. Texas is doing just fine without you…

“My husband and I are planning to move south in a couple years and he has mentioned Austin as a possibility.”

Austin is miles away (both physically and metaphorically) from Waco.

Yeah I know, Austin is an exception.

Indeed the 66% high school graduation rate is the envy of the nation.

Coming from a shining example to their education system …

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure - we’re holding steady around 55% down here.

I love this line from the article:
“A conservative activist group put out a news release suggesting all three(republicans) were in the pocket of “militant Darwinists.””

I wonder if I can get a ‘militant Darwinist’ bumper sticker to go with my Darwin fish.

Haven’t seen any Militant Darwinist stickers, but this would look good on anyone:

.

I especially like the quote under the graphic explaining the graphic.
You would think anybody who thinks of a darwin fish as mocking would know their scripture well enough not to need it explaining to them.
and anyone one who owns a darwin fish doesn’t care what some 2000 year old fairytale says anyway.

Texas is a flaky place. I’ll be back out of it in a month! FWIW, San Antonio is not as whacked out as DFW.

How do we keep ending up here?

My personal feeling on San Antonio is that people spend 3-4 days there, head down to the Riverwalk, think it’s a nice place to live, and end up signing a long term lease before realizing the rest of the town stinks…

Probably true. It’s hotter than hell here, and there are large swaths of not-so-nice places. The riverwalk is nice, and lots of folks probably visit in the “winter”, when it feels OK.

It’s better than Ingleside.

I thought Corpus and surrounding was supposed to be OK

If I lived northwest of the city- out in the hill country- and didn’t have to commute in, it could be OK. Living in a place that’s completely city-locked is wearing on me. Some of the folks ahead of us in rotations at Ft. Riley (KS) were saying it was boring, quiet, and in the middle of nowhere- just the 2 lakes nearby. PERFECT!!! One of the guys heading there at the same time is a good runner- nothing to do but get back in killer running shape. And maybe study a bit too…

Move to ABQ…

That and Sante Fe is on the to-visit list as well.

Not sure what got my husband started on Texas has the reputation of being pretty much the opposite of us but we do know some people in Austin who really like it.

Maybe if we never live outside the city I’ll be OK

I’ve always wanted to see the state because I’m sure there are really beautiful areas.

Too bad there are people in the state that are such wackos and have a bit of an “in” with the state gov.

austin accepts only the good parts of texas, none of the bad

plus I am in austin, we can have wonderful arguments1
