He’s also stupid, just because someone has a Tesla that doesn’t mean they support Elon or MAGA. MY FIL has had one for years and he’s about as anti-MAGA as they come.

Not hard to understand, since the psychological associations are easy to make.
Elon-Tesla-car owner. Therefore car owner is close to Elon. May or may not be true, and it’s shallow… but easy to understand. Which is why some Tesla owners put that sticker on, distancing them from him.
The ironic thing is that people who purchased a Tesla longer than about six months ago are more than likely to be very unhappy with Elon’s current actions.

Teslas also haven’t changed their design much since inception, so it’s hard to differentiate older ones (pre musk nuttiness) from newer ones.

I guess where I struggle is that next step to take action in a way that only does harm. I feel that same way about the capitol riots too. The logical brain in me looks at that and hits a road block. Maybe my moral and ethical code is just that different.

It could be people on the extreme left who hate Elon Musk enough that they take their frustrations out Teslas. It could be people on the extreme right who think Tesla owners are pretentious virtue signally people who are now get their come uppence. Neither is acting rationally.

My WAG is that it is someone with some deeper seated resentment issues lashing out at someone they believe indirectly represents the source of their problems. It could also be that the driver is an asshole and it had nothing to do with Tesla - but not likely.
