Anyone notice the hood latches on the white one? That seems kind of old school and lame to me. My eyes jumped right to them. The blue one didn’t have them, so I’ll take the blue one. Other than that, not a bad looking truck.
i think they are both uber-ugly. but, we are looking to move about 90-100 mis from the airport. i dont drive it every day so it’s not that big of a deal to have a drive like that to work. i dont know how people drive anything longer than 30 mins a day, each way, in rush hour traffic 10x a week. bless their hearts. i’d love something like this truck for my commute.
a buddy at the gym has a tesla X. he drove it from phoenix to lax once then said he’d never do that again. took him 4-5x the travel time vs his gas ride. due to waiting to recharge and the recharge time. he said when he got close to LA he didnt know if he had enough charge to make it through the city so he chose to stop and ‘fill up’ his battery. didnt take as long as a full charge obviously but still a lot longer than getting gas, taking a leak and getting that bucket of soda/coffee/tea and good, but bad for ya, snacks for the drive.
at 100 mis i’d be comfortable with a full charge feeling that i’d have plenty for reserve if/when i hit traffic.

Traffic probably won’t reduce range much. High speed driving creates a log of aerodynamic drag. Trucks are not very aerodynamic. I’m not sure how far Tesla is going to redesign the truck to optimize range.
They did a pretty good job with the semi. I’m not sure why traditional semis don’t do a better job with aerodynamics considering every little bit means cost savings. You can call them ugly, but what is more important, form or function?
Motorcycles are the worst. They are horrible aerodynamically at high speed.

Doesn’t make sense to me. That’s ~400 miles and ~6 hours. 4-5x that would 24-30 hours. Assuming your buddy is a plebe loser with the non-range-extended model X with some wear on the battery, let’s call his vehicle range 200 miles. The SuperCharger charges from dead to 80% in about 40 minutes, and to be super safe he might do that twice, once in Quartzsite and once in Palm Springs or Riverside. So that’d be 7:20 vs. 6:15 (gas car would have to fill up once) .
A worst case would be when there’s a line for the Super Charger, or the capacity is reduced by multiple cars charging at once. So let’s say it’s 3 hours at each stop in an absolute nightmare scenario. That’d be 2x, not 4-5x.
So something must have gone really wrong, like a malfunctioning or out-of-commission charging station or something.
My experience on a trip of a similar length in a buddy’s car (San Luis Obispo to San Diego) was different. One 30-minute stop and one 15 minute stop. Not bad.
And given that the next generation of Tesla (and other brands) are going to have around 400-mile range at the high end and the charging network is only improving in speed and availability, it’ll be harder to find nightmare scenarios.

Sort of. But can you buy a Tesla Model 3 for $35K? Yes. Has Tesla changed the nature of EV cars forever? Probably yes. Can SpaceX deliver a payload into space for you for a fraction of what it used to cost? Yes.
He’s delivered on very, very real innovation that does real things in the real world. He’s not Elizabeth Holmes.

A lot of people thought that landing a rocket on a ship was pure fantasy not too long ago. Some may have even called him a liar for trying to get investors for such a whackadoodle idea. If he hadn’t been there, I’m not sure if we would have a SpaceX. Maybe someone would have eventually done it, but it might have been decades away. Even now, years after their first landing the only other company that might be competitive is funded by the richest man in the world. SpaceX pretty much singlehandedly gutted the Russian space program along with many others.
Now we’re about to see the Telco oligopoly overturned. Who would have even thought this possible a few years ago? It’s like fiction is becoming reality.

ya know…i never made it past his 4-5x comment and thought about it. i guess i got hung up on he’d never do it again. youre right.
for commuting like i’ll be doing, or if someone had a commute every day i think an alt fuel vehicle is great. if i’m heading to southern colorado or up to idaho or montana, i dont think i’m quite ready for one…yet.

Yes his SpaceX success has been great to watch, but as you pointed out, he basically has no competition and its all govt. work. His automotive visions have not been nearly as successful, I don’t think he has met any date he has ever set.
His Hyperloop project has failed spectacularly and is now down to one lane tunnel for an EV to run it and apparently it’s a pretty rough ride, though he “fixed” that by paving the demo tunnel.
