Will be curious to find out more info but we were just before the 2nd aid station and there was a lot of traffic on New Hill Holleman Road, seemed to us as if the road should have been closed to all cars.
Sounds like a bit of a road rage incident. Disobeying cops when they are controlling traffic is a bad idea. Unfortunately, the participant had to take brunt of the driver’s frustrations.

It seemed as if it was more stupidity than anything. They were waving her arms at her to slow down and it seemed as if she thought their waving arms meant turn. She turned, then stopped, not much the guy could do. He almost dodged it and if he didn’t stop suddenly it would have been much worse. It was just and ugly mess. I will be interested to see what the competitors who came through there thought.
I came through before the ambulance arrived. The guy was on the ground with his hand to his face with blood all over this hands and face. Looked horrible, I guess the only good thing is that you guys were right there to help him.
What do you find misleading about the headline? Seems accurate to me.
To me “bicyclist crashes into suv during raleigh ironman race” implies the cyclist was at fault, which is obviously is not the case and was clarified during the article. I would have preferred “Idiot In SUV Smashes Bicyclist” or something along those lines. I might just be sensitive as it was tough to watch someone’s day get cut short and wide up in an ambulance for something that could have and should have been avoided.

That’s not quite what it says. Here’s what the headline says:
Bicyclist injured during Raleigh Ironman, SUV driver charged

Seems like a pretty fair summary to me.
Ah, they updated it, that’s good, but you can see from the url I posted what it was earlier. Better late than never I guess.

It appears the headline has been changed, as often happens with online articles.
I saw the one that seemed to blame the cyclist.

The 1st headline you quoted was an accurate statement of what occurred without inferring an opinion or assigning blame.
hey everyone my name is racin_rusty. someone was hurt really bad in a race and i like to argue over the semantics of a headline on the internet. go me.
Seriously. WTF. I passed the guy as the medics were coming. Who the flip cares about a headline when a guy is hurt. Thanks melting pot for calling him out. Honestly, get a life racin rusty
Was there any indication that the woman was avoiding the hectic activity that goes on at the aid stations?
No, it was far enough ahead that it wasn’t really a factor. That being said the two way traffic made things dicey at times in/near the aid station. Picture a guy towing a giant boat trying to navigate a bunch of cyclists all jockeying for water. I imagine most participants were unaffected by it but as someone who was out there almost the whole time, I felt like there were far too many close calls and a lot of room for improvement. We will be providing feedback to the organizers.

Must have been right around you Runner Rick….saw the same thing…looked like it had just happened. I also saw a guy picking up his gear bags after and he was all bandaged up and had a hospital bracelet on. I asked if he was the one who got hit by the car and it wasn’t him….he wiped out reaching for his water bottle. He looked pretty beat up too.
Feel bad for the accident, but not sure this person’s citation is going to stick, depends on what they were written up for. It sounded to me like the officers signaled to her, she misunderstood slow versus stop and stopped to figure it out.
As far as passing on double yellow, if riders are single file it should not be an issue, but there was probably a peloton, and in most cases you really do not want cars tucked in with packs of bikes for miles and miles which can be the case on many of these routes.
When ever I did race duty, if I knew there was a bad section or road (turns, narrow, no passing) I would use my moto to block the until there was enough clear room. I have seen dozens of times where a car thinks they can pass, traffic comes the other way, and they are forced to press into a group of bikes. I remember I think it was Matty Reed having his front wheel almost taken off by a bumper of a car who had to cut in and panicked and braked as they pulled in.
Hi, I am the wife if the man that was injured during the bicycle portion of the race. I would like to know first hand what happened. If anyone actually saw the accident please email me. Thank you.
