Anyone ever have this? I started riding this summer and that is what triggered it. Even though I took 3 months off from riding while training for a marathon, it didn’t heal. Finally went to the PT last month and he said it is inflammation of the tendon at the top of the hamstring. Interesting because there was a little blurp about this in Feb Triathlete magazine. This has been going on since Aug. Told me to cut down on riding, but I didn’t ride at all from Oct-Dec and now only riding 1/week. What more is there to cut? I think my seat may be too high because the same leg has back of the knee pain. Does that make sense?
No tendonitis but I did have a pretty serious pull in a muscle in my ass last year. Not fun, you tend to use those muscles for a lot of different things.
Struggling with something similar, although mine was brought on by running almost 2 years ago. I’m tight and sore on my right side from my calf to the top of my hip. Sometimes I suspect my piriformis, sometimes my hamstring. I can’t seem to figure it out.
I had a sort of similar problem; asked for info on ST and other forums and found many people with the same thing, but multiple diagnoses from the med community. I tried A.R.T. and it worked like a charm. I would suggest trying ART. Mine was cleared up totally in two 1/2 hr. seessions, with no down time. It is all about repetitive healing stress issues on ligaments and tendons, and it sounds like that is what you have.
I found that stretching twice a day got rid of a lot of little muscle pains for me that may have gotten worse. Those included tendinitis in my ankle, spasms in my quads and pain at the top of my hamstrings.
crashing girl! I have the same thing and for a long time I’ve suspected piriformis and just lately I’ve been thinking more hamstring…I’ve had this going on for over a year now, on and off. It’s totally annoying.
Did I mention that I am working on my new degree in “Recreational Gynocology”…oddly ehough this semester I am focusing on Butt and Foot rubs…I think I may be able to help you on the road to recovery…
I actually thought my was piriformis, also, b/c the pain was radiating down my leg when it was at the worst. I thought that was the piriformis irritating the sciatic nerve. The therapist corrected me. He had me point with one finger t othe spot it hurt. For me the stop was right at the sitz bone, indicating tendon involvement. He also told me that these are lingering injuries, difficult to heal. The article in Triathlete mentioned something about less blood flow to this area, slowing healing. I’m starting to believe.
The advice I got was don’t do anything that irritates it. Fortunately for me this is only biking and lunges. Also ice and NSAID’s. I started those last week. The weird part is that I have times when it feels good but as soon as I bike or lunge it is right back. Hope some of this can help you.
I just got out my trusty racketball and massaged my hamstring, and WOWSA that sucka was TIGHT! I’m thinking like you now: Maybe the hammy is the main culprit? It’s so hard to tell what is the root of it - like which came first, the chicken or the egg?
TriKitty~ I was just telling CG that one of the reasons I suspect piriformis is I have one of the classic symtoms (or so I’m told) it gets really achy on long car trips, me driving. I should mention it’s my right leg, hence the driving ache!
KK-mine also hurts when sitting for long periods- which sucks b/c I sit at a computer all day. I am constantly shifting around trying to find a comfy spot. Driving home from my marathon in December nearly drove me insane!!
hmmmm, so maybe it is the hamstring! BTW- I find it helpful if I roll up a towel and prop it under the hurt cheek! I guess hoisting it up a bit relieves the pressure somehow!
If I ever need a gynocologist to rub my foot, I think I have bigger issues than a pain in my butt. Thanks for the offer, though!
This is about a “whole body” approach…just cause your cars intake is okay does not mean the tires are not bald…got to look at the big picture…
