Tempe tri (1)

I was visiting Phoenix this past weekend and on a whim decided to run the sprint at Tempe Town Lake. I must have had the dorkiest bike there (it was a rental), but I had a great time (as in fun . . . not necessarily fast). My only complaint was the bike/run transition, which I overshot, which then caused me to utter lots of loud, un-feminine obsencities. Sorry:)

Here’s what I found interesting (aside, of course, from the dog paddler in the Oly race). I noticed this 13-year-old girl at the swim start. After the race, I checked the results and this girl smoked ALL the women on the swim (8:06 for 500m). Winning female sprint time was 1:17; she finished 1:23. I was checking out the men’s times to see who beat her. Turns out her 14-year-old brother took her by 6 seconds with an 8:00 time and an overall 1:14 finish. Their 16-year-old sister also took part. What a family!

The Tempe Tri was very poorly marked. I got a flat tire on the course and could not find any help at all. I finally got back to the transition area and they told me that I was disqualified for having a flat tire. I told them that I was fixing it and that I was going to continue on in the race. The then took my timing chip away and said have fun! What a load of bull. I’ve never been to such an event where they treat everyone so poorly. When my father crossed the line they had ran out of water at the finish line. I think that they were too concerned with calling everyone’s name out correctly than actually taking care of the course and the people doing the event. Thoroughly dissapointed in the 3D Racing people. Doubt if I’ll ever do another one of the their events ever again. PROTEST 3DRACING!!! BOO!!!

Me and three of my buddies did the Oly race. Had a great time! Thought that 3D did a good job. No doubt that the 180 degree turn at the end of the bike needs fixing, as they acknowlege on their website, but overall, we had a great experience! Great venue, fun race, plenty of volunteers, door prizes during the awards!!! I will go back!!!

Well, everyone has their own experience and opinion. I found the course to be extremely well marked, in fact I have no idea how you could possibly get off course. There was a cone like every 100 feet, I just don’t get it. Last year the rant was that it was too crowded, so he made it 2 longer laps instead of 3 shorter ones, and the course was extremely wide in some areas, too tight for 3 across in others but never a problem (for me). I did have the same issue as the first poster making the turn, even though I knew exactly where it was…the volunteer shouted something that made me think I was supposed to go further down, and then another one corrected but too late. Flat tires, well, why didn’t you carry a spare? If you didn’t, then you took the chance. I saw someone walking their flat tired bike in as I was completing the run (probably you then)…there were not too many still on the bike at that time, so I think it is an unfair to criticise them for not allowing you back on the course “officially”, and how would they verify you went back to where you left anyway. Besides, why would you care about your timing chip at that point? Running out of water at the finish…I don’t know, maybe they miscalculated but fercrisakes, walk over to the water fountain 400M from the finish and have all you want.

All in all, this was a well run race. They made some nice improvements over last year, and last year was not nearly so bad as people have been making it seem. It sort of burns my ass when someone makes a big deal, suggesting we protest the race organizer on an international forum, over such minor things. Putting these races on is very hard, and 3Disciplines is doing a better than average job for the money. I feel bad for them with Red Rock putting events on the schedule right next to established 3Disciplines events…WTF? You can say “may the best event survive” but I fear they both will be in trouble with only half the participation they would otherwise get.

If you are a big cry baby, I suggest you avoid this event, practically every other local event, Wildflower, World’s Toughest, IMNZ, etc, etc, etc. I mean, this is supposed to be a challenge, when did triathletes become so wimpy! Geez, we have to expect them to fix our flat tires for us? What is this coming to?

Protest 3D? Are you nuts? Last thing we need is to protest race organizers! If you have improvements to suggest, why don’t you email them to the director. I did exactly that concerning the turn on the bike and was given a nice response.

Since 3D has been slammed here before, let me go on the record as saying, from my prespective, last years race was on par in terms of safety, concessions, and whatever else, with the majority of the races I have done (I’ve been racing tri since 1987). The long swim was my only complaint, and even then, so what…more for your money. This years race was easily among the best courses I have seen and an overall improvement over last year. I’ve seen bigger finishing parties, but ya gotta get a beer sponsor if you want a great post race party!

I was at this race as well and I have nothing but good things to say about the race, the venue, and 3D racing. I was also one of those people that overshot the 180 degee turn into the transition area but 3D has already acknowledged the problem and will think of something better for next year. As for the flat, if you didn’t bring anything with you on the bike to fix it yourself, you shouldn’t be complaining. I don’t think the race organizers are responsible for the flat or to have support on the course in case you do get one. Stuff like that happens and you just have to be prepared for it.

Anyway, I had a great time and I think 3D put on a great race.

Hey Amy:

I wish I had know you were going to be there. It was my first open water race. I thought it was well run and well marked. I had a blast, even though I am always bringing up the rear.

3D has gotten a bad reputation because of the mismarking of the course last year. I wasn’t there so I can’t compare, but I have nothing but good things to say about my experience.

As for flat tires, I had a friend who did the Oly, flatted 2x, used all her spares and then rode on a flat the rest of the way. She DNF because she only did on lap, but she toughed it out and didn’t ruin her wheel.

i am also a little confused as to the “poorly marked” commentary. i thought it was a very solid race. i think it will be bigger next year as a lot of people were seeing whether kenny(the 3d rd) could put on a complete race with no major foul ups. i think he accomplished that. my only complaint was it took forever before they did the raffles/awards.

further, while the race scene in phoenix is picking up, i don’t think there are enough local races that you can really boycott a certain rd.

i also did the race in '03. i didn’t think it was that bad either. what impresses me is that kenny made some real efforts to listen to the racers and make some pretty big changes in the courses to reflect many people’s complaints.

looking forward to next year…

Just to back up the comments that they run the race pretty poorly…at last year’s race they had similar problems with a poorly marked bike course and the swim was 1000 meters longer than 1500m. They claimed that it was only 300m longer but nobody’s swim time reflected that. Last year they ran out of water, too, at a few of the aid stations and at the finish line area. If they did again this year you would think they learned from their mistakes of last year. You can walk over to the water fountain a few hundred meters away from the T area, but not out on the course. Rememebr it is in Pheonix (HOT). They should have over prepared.

Now with the other 3D race last fall (the 1/2 IM in November). I did not do this race but I heard from a number of athletes that said the same thing. The organization sucked. Course was VERY poorly marked and they had very little volunteers. If they are going to organize a large race like that, make sure you have enough support. period. I have promoted many many bike races in the past so I know what it is lkike trying to get volunteers, but if you don’t have enough a couple of weeks out, cancel the race and refund. That’s what I did.

I was in the top 3 in my age group when I got out of the water and ended the race in just under 2:25. I was very happy with that result considering I had to talk to some guy and change my tire. I guess I was only angry at the fact that they disqualified me because I do think that it was a great course. I thought that the bike course was a very smooth and hilly ride and that the run was very good. I don’t actually believe that we should boycott 3d racing but I do think that they could do a better job. I think it would be interesting to compare this race with the rio salado. I will be doing that race and the Columbia, Md Triathlon the next weekend. Anyways, have a good one.

Okay, truce. They can always do better. Congrat’s on your swim!

But I have to add, last year the swim course was long but not 2500M, as someone else said.

I’m going to skip Rio Salato, I’ll be very interested to hear how it compared from anyone who does both.
