Tempe Intl Tri - The good, bad and the ugly (RR)

Ok, so it’s only a sprint, but its the first one in 20 years, so it deserves a RR.

Original plan - To be out of the swim and T1 in under 8 minutes (400m). Finish the bike in under 36 minutes (20k), and be under 25 minutes for the run (5k), under 1:10 for the entire race.

Swim - Water temp was listed at 74 degrees, but I found out they take the water temp at 3 feet depth. Surface was much warmer, and felt great. We started treading water out away from the shore. I didn’t have too much problem with feet and elbows, but I did screw up by not sighting enough. Ended up whacking my arm off a kayak because I strayed off course to the right (All left turns). Finished the swim feeling pretty good, right in the middle of the pack.

T1 - Ran the 100m to the entrance, then another 50m to where my bike was racked near the T1 exit. Adrenaline was going, I figured screw the socks, cram my feet into the shoes and go. Mistake #1. Spaced washing all the grass and crap off my feet. Ran my bike out of T1 and down the 100m or so to where we could actually mount in the parking lot. Got on, headed out.

Bike - Advertised at 12.2, actual distance 13.7 over the two laps. Olympic would have been long by 3 miles. 5 or 6 90 degree turns and tight turns (Including one 180 degree), saw quite a few people blowing the corners. (One very nice recovery, lady came around, locked the brakes, skidded, banged her disc off the curb and never went down.). Managed to hold a pace of 20.5mph over the whole course, passed about as many as passed me. Felt good, didn’t feel like I was really hurting to make my pace. Mistake #2 - Coming into the dismount, thought I’d do something I’ve never done, just loosening my strap and slipping my feet out of the shoes. Completely f*d it up, lost a good 30 seconds fumbling around, but never fell down.

T2 - Ok, time for socks. Crap. No socks. Crap. No cap. I swear I packed them, they probably slept in. So, I cram my feet into my shoes and go. Probably under 1 min for T2.

Run - Got 1/4 mile into the run, both calves decided they wanted to give cramp warnings. I slow to a walk, stretch them out on the curb, and keep going. I know I’m doing the “Don’t die shuffle”, but I can’t get myself to go any harder, and actually end up walking 4 or 5 times in the first couple miles. I see a couple people in my AG that are doing the same thing, and I run enough to leave them behind. By mile 1.5 or so, I can feel hot spots on both arches, and I end up with a couple blisters on each foot by the end of the race, and a couple on the top of the foot. I get to mile 2 checkpoint, gulp some gatorade, and decide to at least HTFU and not stop the last 1.1 miles. I accomplish this. Yay me.

So, my total overall time was 1:18:xx (I forget the seconds). I think I made my swim goal, and the bike was 39:22 by pace, not including the quarter mile of running with the bike. Take away the extra 1.5 miles and I made my bike time goal, but that means that my run was close to 30:00 (Please, please let it at least be under 30 mins).

Final analysis: Not too bad, I finished 84th overall (I think around 450 entrants), and 13th in my AG (5 of which I know passed me in the last 1.5 miles of the run), so I might be either FOMOP, or BOFOP. Training needs to be definitely ramped up, I’ve biked about 500 miles since mid Jan, swam maybe 30k since then, and ran about 15-20 miles a week. The last two weeks have been very slack on training, due to work and the whole getting the asthma stuff sorted. (Ok, and I was lazy).

I KNOW that I have more in me for the run especially, and can get a lot more serious about my training. I can drop about 8 more lbs from the engine (Race weight was about 175, 5’10"), and I can drop about 8-10 lbs from the bike (27 lbs). I’m somewhat disappointed in my results, but looking realistically at my training and slackness over the last couple weeks, it’s not too bad. So, back to the training!

Off course in a 400 m swim with turns???

That’s the really sad part.

Welcome back after a 20 year break. Tempe was tough yesterday. I did the Oly and struggled to keep any sort of speed on the bike, the corner at Priest and Rio Solado coming back was a tight one and I misjudged on my first loop, a couple of others did not have the smoothest pavement for a high speed turn. Overall, I averaged around 22.5 on the bike which should be my half IM pace not Oly pace but oh well. I completely melted on the run and could not push hard at all. I struggled the whole 10k with the heat, and I’d like to talk to the genius who thought a flight of stairs in the middle of a run course would be fun.

I have been sick with a cold or something for about the last 3 weeks and my lungs have been congested and wheezy even with Albuterol and Atrovent. Hopefully I can get things cleared out and get back to race form. I have a sprint on Memorial Day and then another Oly at Deuces Wild in Show Low.

How did you lungs feel?

Lungs felt really good, actually. About 3 hours after I had that nagging “after exercise cough” for a little while, but overall I felt pretty good breathing wise. The run was pretty warm, even for the sprinters going through at 7:20ish. I’m glad to hear that others thought it was tough, the times from last year seemed a lot faster.

And yeah, the stairs just after the 2 mile mark were fun. I would have hated to be doing the Oly and have to hit them at 2.5 and 5 miles. Blegh. I suppose there are a ton of people that would be happy with my time, and I should be considering my training, but I’m still a bit disappointed in myself. :-/

Oh, and I have to give props to my wife. Got out of bed to be there for my finish, before having to dash home and do makeup before her drive to Tucson for her Feis (Irish Dance competition) on Sunday. My wife rocks.

My cough flared up pretty bad after about an hour of resting and refueling. I’m thinking I might need to go see the dr. if this keeps up.

Sorry to be a dick but things like this usually do not appear in a RR from a sprint

don’t see the results posted on Tucson Racing’s website yet. any where else to look?

I haven’t seen them posted yet either, they had preliminary results taped to the side of one of the moving trucks just past the finish line when I came back to collect my bike and gear. That’s why I know my times but not my splits.

“Hey, sorry to be a dick (Which I don’t really mean so I’ll go ahead and be a dick anyway)”. I’m sorry you’re a dick too. I died on the run and did the best I could. The way I was feeling, not stopping that last section was a minor achievement for me. I admitted my mistakes, etc. Thanks for the support.

don’t forget to let him know what the temps were on sunday…

don’t forget to let him know what the temps were on sunday…
I couldn’t, I don’t know what they were, other than I classified it as “hot”. Temp right now is 95, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we were in the low 90’s yesterday at race time.

John

Don’t know either, but the high yesterday was 106F.

Devlin,

welcome back after 20 years, disregard the silly comments. i wonder how many people have never flubbed a turn and gone off in the wrong direction themselves, or never got cramps…

I had a hard time seeing the first buoy with the sun right in my eyes (i was last sprint wave off at almost 7 am, i maybe was better earlier? I am also somewhat colorblind and I always have a hard time with red vs yellow or orange buoys). after that was ok.

I understand the cramps too- was getting warm, even at 7:30. Especially if you are still coming back from a long layoff it’s not surprising to me.

This was my first race since my “truck vs leg” accident 16 months ago. I did a couple of the splash n dash races recently and swam 1500 as part of “team homewreckers” in Bartlett lake relay 2 wks ago.

I didnt’ start my watch, I just know i finished in 1.36 - felt fine in swim and bike but still can’t run faster than 13 min mile on the road… so I think i hit my goal of under and hour for the swim and bike + t1 and t2, then about 40 mins for the 3.1 miles. I had fun, gave me some confidence that I can get back to my old form and speed one day.

Congrats - hope you will keep up the racing.

Thanks, and you too! I'll keep racing, it wasn't a horrible result, just not what I was gunning for. I'm thinking an Olympic or sprint again towards late June, early July.

Yeah, it was hard even at 6:30 to spot the buoy. I just tucked in behind someone and followed their feet, and trusted they were going the right way :)~ It was on the long leg back to the third buoy that I started going out wide right. (Should have just stayed behind the feet…)

If you hit your goal for the bike, etc. then you did well, I measured the bike at 13.76 on my comp from transition entrance to transition entrance. I did blow by the entrance after my second lap and had to come back, they weren’t doing a great job of flagging it. Mostly the volunteers were pretty kick ass, and they certainly had a ton of kids at the water stations holding cups!

John

For summer olympic (also sprint and half IM) you might check out mountainman in flagstaff- July 20th. great weather, great course, just different racing at 7,000 feet… I may try it, seeing my phys therapist next week and hope to have some insight into my running. Did the long course in 2006, the olympic twice and it’s about my favorite race.

the temp was pretty warm. Not crazy hot, but enough for you to feel it. Its funny to me how people use the jackass phrase of “yeah, but its a dry heat.” Like 105 feels like 73 because its dry.

ppphhbbbbbtttttt… :D~

LOL

For the record, I watched Chris G, Murphy’s Law and a couple of other friends do the Harriman Half on Saturday. It was a windy morning, and most swimmers got blown off course on the triangle leg heading back toward the beach. Some were as much as 50 yards off as they approached the bouy and had to make a hard left hand turn into the wind to make it back to the bouy and then do a 180 to start the second lap. So yes, stuff happens. The swim course was visually long by my opinion, coupled with the wind and drift, it made for really long swim splits. So bad, that they haven’t posted the splits yet.

Regarding Chris’s comments on the run, he was just funnin’ ya. They all had a nice long hard run Saturday, that was surprisingly uphill in both directions.

My bad, forgot the  at the end. BTW you have my full support, especially about the not swimming straight part.

Heh, no prob. I can be a bit prickly sometimes.

Oh, and at least you have the wind to blame the swim on. I just, well, not sure what I did :)~
