Tell me about Indiana!

I am wondering how big the tri scene is around Indianapolis in particular. Where are the great places to swim, ride, run etc?
Thanks

I live in Indianapolis, but I’m somewhat retired from the tri scene. I can tell you, there’s a race almost every weekend during the summer somewhere in central Indiana. There’s a half dozen races hosted right here in town at Eagle Creek park. Eagle creek is a place where lots of people get together to train – riding, running, etc. There are multiple places to swim, depending on where you live or how far you want to drive. There’s a master’s swim club in town, though I never trained with them. I swim at a local gym, and there seems to be quite a few other triathlete types there. There are lots of great running places in town, including lots of urban pathways. I live just off the Monon greenway, which is a multi-use bike/run/etc path that runs all the way from downtown north about 10 miles. There are many other greenways…

The city and area ARE NOT very bike friendly. Few bike lanes and drivers are not at all used to sharing the road. This was always a problem for me as I live IN the city and didn’t much like riding in it…

If you have more specific questions about Indy in general, fee free to PM me or post here. I know there are a few others in the LR who live in this area.

For a look at some of the local races, try http://www.tuxbro.com/results.htm

I live in Indy too, and there is a decent tri scene here. I completely agree about Indy being very bike UNfriendly. It usually is that way until you get out into the country (Northern Indy areas have great cycling roads) where there is less traffic.

Also Vern at T3 is a great fitter, and good dude.

Also, for swimming, there is the Natatorium downtown, and I hear Indyswimfit is great for helping on swimming skills.

while driving through indiana on the way to a cross country meet i determined that it is one of the last states i would want to live in. incredibly flat and boring.

More mountain biking opportunities than you would expect:

In general this is not a healthy fitness type city or state but you can easily find great Masters and age group swimming (coaching and facilities), and good running and riding if you are interested.

We have many more 50 meter competition pools around Indy than most states.

Feel free to PM.

The tri scene in Indy is really lame…unless you like sprints. The local organizer just wants the $$ so they host seven billion sprints and one olympic. That is it. I live here.

If you need a tri shop go to Chris or Dolph @ www.a1cyclery.com They will not steer you wrong and will not sell you any crap that you really don’t need, unless of course you really want it. Chris and Dolph are both FIST fitters too if you buy into that as well. More to the point is that they bring a lot of cycling industry experience and are great guys in general.

Just don’t call transplants ‘Hoosiers’

and there is that too…

I encourage you to look up the word “hoosier” in an unabridged dictionary. A couple meanings listed are “an unskilled rustic” and “to botch a job”.

Sounds like IU basketball in the 90’s

What is “basketball”? Is it a sport like football or hockey?

Ha ha ha

Hey…I loved that Hoosier movie…
.

If I knew then what I know now, I’d never have moved to Indianapolis…for a wide range of reasons. I’m a midwest native (WI), but I feel like Indiana is more of a southern state than a midwest state.

Anway, I fell for a Hoosier, now I’m engaged, she needs to be close to family for various reasons, so I’m stuck here. At least the cost of living is low!

Well it sure looked beautiful to me the areas I visited and coming from the flatlands of Canada which is sooo boring, Indy actually looked pretty great… You make the best of things right?

Congrats on the engagement!

sigh…obviously you drove I-70 through the middle of the state. Dont knock it til you try it.

an hour from Indy is the MECCA of Bloomington, Indiana…home of THE LITTLE 500. The best, craziest race in the world. Riding on cinders on a single speed bike, exchanging bikes with teammates for 200 laps (50 miles).
