Tell Me About Dog Training Collars

With our new arrivals, one will be staying with us. She will be my running partner & duck retriever and I’m looking for a good but budget conscious training collar.

Not sure what price range you are looking at, but, the DT Systems products are top-rated. Below is the one I purchased. Completely water and weather proof. Very, very long range. Great options. Easy to figure out. Works really well.

I like the option of vibrate. I started using the vibrate with a mild shock. Now, I can get my weim’s attention with just the vibrate.

Thanks, that’s actually the brand that had caught my eye, esp because there’s the option to condition the dog to the point that shocking shouldn’t be necessary. Have you used their dummy launcher? That’ll be the next thing.

That was our most favorite thing to do when we were kids. Dad would let us fire it off while he was training his lab for duck season.

I haven’t tried that, but, it looks pretty awesome.

I Have used Tritronics collars for all my sporting dogs.

Excellent durability in the harshest of conditions.

The Pro 70 is a good compromise between cost and range. About the same out of pocket as theone on Amazon you were looking at by DT systems. I prefer the Garmin because it also has the bark limiter function built into the collar that can be remotely activated. Helps prevent them from getting collar wise to the bark prevention collars.

Garmin bought them back in 2013 and now they have GPS enabled collars so you can find your dog if it runs off!

I second what Karma is saying about the TriTronics. I run a pro 200 on my dogs (a slight upgrade from the Pro 70 but they don’t make it any more). Depending on how sensitive your dog is, the 6 levels of stim on the Pro 70 may be a bit coarse, and the Pro 550 offers 18 levels of stim. (It’s worth noting that both go from very light to heavy, it’s just a difference between that spectrum divided into 6 levels vs. 18 - the 18 levels isn’t actually going to go any higher or lower).

Regarding durability, the transmitter for my first 200 was clipped to my belt loop one day last November. The belt loop broke and I lost the transmitter. In March I received a phone call from Lion Country Supply saying that a local guy had found it and they gave me his phone number. It still works and I use it every day after it spent last winter, outside, in a swamp in Minnesota. The built in bark collar is a great idea and the light is awesome when you let the dog out at night and you want to see where he is in the yard (I added a light to my collar).

I also have a Garmin Astro 320 that I use when the dog is running in the woods. I would not use a GPS/e-collar combo on a dog around the house due to the antenna being so long that I am certain my dog would find a way to chew the end off of it when he got bored.

The two places I get all of my stuff from are Lion Country Supply and Gun Dog Supply. Gun Dog Supply has a pretty good write up on which collars do what and the value they represent. http://www.gundogsupply.com/dog-training-collars-buyers-guide.html

I agree that the best prices and superb customer service can be found with the good people at Gundogsupply.com
