Techie question - crankset

If I have a shimano 7701 octalink crankset arms and I want to mount 10 speed chainrings to it will it properly function? Given I have 10 speed derailleurs and 10 speed components. And the bolt patterns are the same. What is the true difference between the 7701 and 7800 crankset other than the material from which they’re made?

The 7800 chainrings will work without a problem on the 7701 crankset. Just make sure you get a matching set so the ramps on the rings line up correctly.

As for differences between the series of cranksets there are many. The most notable one was the switch to the external bearing bottom bracket design, integrated spindle, etc.

Burt,

The rings will fit but Shimano Tech Support tells me (I just called as I personally did not know the answer) that the inner ring won’t work with a 10speed chain. In essence you can’t change your 9speed cranks to 10speed system - sorry. You can call them yourselves at 949-951-5003.

Are you sure your 7701 crankset won’t function properly with the current chainrings? The older FSA Octalink cranksets claim to be 9/10 compatible, so I’m guessing (just a guess on my part) that you stand a fair chance of these working with 10 speed if you change derailleur.

Use the 7701 (9sp) chainrings. They will work just fine.
