Does anyone know if it is bad to use cork brakes with aluminum wheels? It’s just bad to use rubber brake pads on carbon wheels right? If so then why is it not good?
i’m about 99% sure that using cork pads on aluminum rims won’t hurt the rims at all. however, i’m also pretty sure that the braking performance/power would be crappy.
brake pads don’t cost much and aren’t hard to change, so get some that are better for aluminum. swiss stops are good, and so are kool stop salmons for aluminum rims. i’m sure there are more.
and also, you don’t want to use the same pads for carbon and aluminum wheels. when you use any pads on aluminum wheels, little bits of metal can get embedded in the pads. then, when you go back to your nice carbon rims…not a good combo. unless you clean/sand them very carefully first.
oh brother… ever try google. : )
its what climber7 said, your cork pads can accumulate metal shards in them which then can damage your carbon wheels, mostly ppl who live around mountains would have to worry about it. Here in ND we only have to brake about 3 times a ride so not a big issue.
PS hurry home, ride in the AM?
Yeah yeah yeah I know. And it’s all what I assumed but I wanted to hear directly from someone with experience. That’s what I told Sam…“we never use our brakes in ND” haha! Getting home at 4:15 am so depends on what you mean by “morning”. Going to be cold!
