…Just wondering if a rear Campy Shamal can be made compatible with a ShimaNO 9 sp system. I love the Shamals and have a couple of fronts. A guy I know wants to sell a rear but I’m unsure if there is any way it can be mated with Shimano.
As far as I’m aware 9 spd is pretty much compatable across the board. I used to run a campy 9 spd training wheel, and race on a Durace 9 spd, Campy shifters and deraileur. You should be sweet, those Shamals are a nice wheel.
It’s that simple? Will the wheel take a Shimano cassete or would I run a Campy cassette?
Campy and Shimano have essentially identical spacing btween cog centers, but have a different cassette “offset,” the distance between the axle cap and 1st cog center. The difference is slight, but in most cases is noticeable/problematic.
What this means is, you can run Campy wheels with Shimano (and V/versa) with no problem, but you cannot switch back and forth between the two types of wheels without adjusting your rear derailleur. Technically, this adjustment should be made with the stop setting, which makes it impractical to do as a race wheel/training wheel switch, but I have used neutral support Shimano 9 on my campy 9 and gotten by with just adjusting cable pull.
mixing drivetrains will work less well on smaller bikes, with more acute chain angles. trust me. I have a really small bike that used to be a frankenbike crosser (and is now a singlespeed - the drastic solution to drivetrain problems). so it isn’t quite ‘no problem’ for everyone, although it is for a lot of people (as fredly noticed). in response to cerveloguy, a ShimaNO derailleur will undershift on a Campy cassette, so move the limit stops out.
I there are spacer kits to convert Campy 9 to ShimaNO 9. Campy freehub bodies are longer than ShimaNO ones, so the reverse didn’t get done. see http://www.branfordbike.com/cassette/cog.html for the full, gory details. you will need to use a Campy cassette with all loose cogs. I know the 9s Veloce cassettes have all loose cogs, and I’m not sure what else did.
Branford Bike would also be able to get you a freehub body that would accept a ShimaNO cassette. these will expensive, though. see here: http://www.branfordbike.com/campy/campy.html#RearHubs part FW-98-41 is a freehub body with ShimaNO splines that will replace the regular body on all of Campy’s 9/10s oversize hubs (ie, the current generation, not the 9s generation), and will do the same with all the 1999 and later botique wheels. so, if your friend’s Shamal rear has a 10s freehub body, this part will work. it will also cost a hundred bucks.
as you may have noticed, I’m a big Campy fan. why not just switch over to Campy?
