This is a little off the topic, but not far. I am competing in a TTT this weekend - 3 man teams. I have never done this before, and wondered if there were any tricks or tips people could share. We are all fairly experienced in terms of individual TT’s, but aside from riding together in road races, have never done a TTT…
cheers
James
Keep the pulls short, and don’t surge. It is just like riding in a 3 man break.
As long as everyone agrees, stay in your aerobars. Call out when slowing for a turn and the direction of the turn.
Share your aero equipment if you have extra with a teammate.
If there are hillls and one guy is week, slingshot him up if it is legal.

You mean like a ‘madison sling’? I guess since it is not a USCF race we can do almost whatever we like… Interesting idea…
Yes, or do what my training partner does with me in January when i am really week. Just push him up the hill.
Lol, well hopefully it won’t come to that, but if it did, that would be me being pushed! Its a nice long race (52 miles), but the only hills are some sharp rollers about 20 miles out. One of us is a climber/critter so he will probably be backing off for the two of us who are more truly ‘slow twitching tt’ers’. Thanks for the input.

Our roadie club is thinking of trying a three rider TT. We do solo TT’s every now and then. I’m sure we’ll ban riding on the aero bars except for the rider at the front. I could see potential problems unless the riders were very experienced at team TT’s and practiced together regularly.
I’ve never done one, but it sounds like it could be a lot of fun.
Your team can only be as strong as its weakest member! Also, in a TTT event, typically there is a minimum of riders that must cross the line together in order for the teams effort to be ‘scored.’ You need to have a contingency plan for the possibility that should someone ‘hit the wall’ while on the course, what are the other team members to do? Assuming that at a minimum 2 riders must finish together, the options obviously include regrouping and then easing the tempo or letting the other team member fall off the pace and continue on hoping that the remaining members will not encounter a similar problem. The 3 of you need to decide riding order - it does no good to have your largest/most powerful rider come off the front after a hard turn and roll in at the back of the line only to end up behind some skinny little dude who has an aero cross-section/CD of a nat (been there, done that)!

Yes, thats one big challenge we have as our ‘critter’ is pretty small (about 5’4" 140lbs) while we others are more like 5’10" 170lbs… of course we also tend to be faster on ITTs, while he is the better road racer due to his climbing and ability to surge with the pack (and away from it). Of course if we go in size order largest-smallest then we will not be able to avoid the ‘gnat’ scenario!
Good point about the min number of teammates to finish. I think it will be all three, but will check on that.
