Team Tryouts!

Hey,
So I wanted some opinions about different possibilities for tryouts. We’re a University club and we have 9 or 10 guys looking to go to nationals in April and there’s only 7 spots. So we have to have a tryout to decide who’s going. The problem is we are in Vermont and so it’s not really feasible to do a mini triathlon in the winter. Right now we’ve decided on doing a 1500 swim in the pool and a 10 km run in February to decide. I think that’s a little much because we can’t peak then and we will only be part way through our training.

Do you guys have any better ideas???

Thanks

Who are the 7 guys who will be the fastest at nationals?

What happens to guy #8 that has an off day in the tryout but is the best on the team, or is a racer?

Can you let everyone be on the team and maybe sort out who will actually get the 7 slots later? That way you can be more inclusive and still have: more time to decide who deserves it, a decision based on fitness closer to race day, a bigger group to train with, competition to push people to improve, and reserves if someone has to bail last minute. Plus there will be other races, so it’s not like this is the only opportunity for other people on the team to race.

So we have 2 guys who are basically 1 and 2 on the team and really don’t need to do it, but that still leaves 5 guys who are pretty close to the same speed. Well hopefully number 8 will not be that person!

Well the only options you really have if you really want tp choose now are:

  1. Last years results
  2. Random name draw
  3. Full fledged indoor triathlon. Base it on time not who finishes a specific distance first. Have each person swim, bike, run for an allotted time and the farther they get the higher their placing.Allow minimal time (but realistic time) between events.

Only fair way to decide: Beer Mile
.

ya sweet an indoor triathlon would be sick…never done one before, but what time frames would on eusually use for that?? and would an indoor track work ok??

To be fair I would use treadmills. Easier to keep all variables the same (ie no one gets in the way). Put them at 1% grade and the people running get to choose the speed. Obviously the faster they can go the better.

As for times, well I would look at last years nationals and base it on the top finishers, rounded up for ease.

Ideally you will run a few people at a time, so this will take some fancy booking with the gym.

hahaha beer mile was already accomplished and has been a ritual for the past 2 years sadly we almost lost one of our best athletes to an injury during this event last year!!

find a loaded sponsor and travel to one of the other conferences. WCCC is already racing in February.

hahaha ya so damn lucky out west!! all we got is the penguin plunge!!!

You need to include all 3 events. Screw the indoor track/treadmill. Pick a Saturday and do the 1500m TT in the pool in the morning and a 10K in the afternoon or the next morning. Then contact Fastsplits to set up a computrainer race for your team. You’ll have to road trip to Boston:

As far as whether this will get you the top 7? That’s Life. The best team doesn’t always win, but at least they had as fair a shot as anyone else.

I’m not understanding why you have only so many spots on a club? Is it funding, because that’s where club dues come into play. Just have a large club and whoever is the best will make it to nationals. . . After all this isn’t a varsity sport

OOh no…hell, no! In Vermont, it is the only way…Chinese Downhill!!

Ya looks pretty cool!!! seems definitely something to look into!!!

Ya only the top 7 i guess can represent each club!! and since we have a pretty small budget all the fundraising we do goes towards those who qualified!

Roads are still worthy of riding up here in VT, just a bit chilly  . Bring on a pool swim, road TT and 10k run.

If there are only 7 allowed though I would seriously put it off until Feb for a decision to make sure everyone’s training is well, nothing ruins someones schedule to travel and no injuries pop up.

you could use the nectc ranking or results from mightyman regional champs since we all tried to peak for that race. unfortunately one of your guys might have gotten one of the many flats or had an off day. the time trial swim and 10km seem like a good idea but february seems a bit late to know for sure that their going to nationals. i know im going to natuionals already so i can plan way in advance my build, training schedule, etc. not that big of a deal but they might want to know sooner rather than later for peace of mind sake and to get in the right mind set. but feb would be a good time to have your guys pretty fit to race. indoor mini tri sounds pretty sick too. just give them a bit of time for to build and prepare and have at it. see you guys in alabama. congrats.

I didn’t think you actually have to put names to the slots until much closer to the event. That would give you time to determine “the process” and have everybody get used to the idea.

Results from “conference meets” should be one of the major factors.

Nothing to add about this year but for NEXT YEAR…

You should come up with a point system for races over the course of the year to decide who gets to go in 2013. That way you won’t run into this problem.

Not sure how big your club is but you should think about creating a board of directors and make by-laws, if you don’t/haven’t.
