I see team kits (local guys) with logos for Specialized, Mavic etc. on their jersey. What is the deal with that? Do you need permission? Are they getting sponsor money?
Gee Whiz-you could have at least had the courtesy to put OT in the subject line. This is the LR buddy. Not Tri-talk allowed!!!
Bernie
They probably aren’t getting money but more likely just some sort of discount. That’s how it was for us in college anyway…same with my former tri club.
oops!
I really don’t know he answer to your question either. I would assume that a company wouldn’t care if their name was being advertised for free. I just thought it would be funny to give you some gentle ribbing.
Bernie
Our team (Velo Bella) has our sponsors listed on our kit stuff… Kona being the most prominent. The team looks for sponsors, secures them, and they get put on our stuff–in exchange we get discounts and whatnot. I don’t think anyone gets “cash”, per se. (This only applies to the amateurs–I don’t know of the VB pros get $$)
what if you dont really have sponsors and you put company logos on your kit for looks?
usually you need permission from the brand
.
are you the artist formerly known as erik clark?
You need legal permission, I believe, to be slapping a brandmark all over yourself.
Why would you do that?
do what?
Put a logo on that’s not a sponosr. I don’t mean why would “you” do that. Why would a team do that? Not seeing the purpose.
I wouldn’t because I dont have a team but I notice that on others I see. I’m talking about joe sixpack bike teams. you might see a specialized logo and all the guys are using different bikes. I think it is just to look pro-like.
I think the other answers covered it. Specialized might sponsor a team but not provide free bikes. Pro teams on a payroll are a different story. I don’t think its to look pro. Any team wants sponsors and in return will put the logo on its kit. Its a symbiotic relationship.
Do people join teams based on the kit? Seems silly.
Here is the base of our kit:

ANYONE can buy it at Team Estrogen (or at least the last few years they could)–but VB team members get discounts not on ly on that gear, but also gear from our sponsors…did we get free Kona bikes? No…but we did get discounts on them. Same thing with other stuff from the sponsors.
Are we all famous, fabulous pros? Nope. A lot of the team members don’t even race. And some of us only wear it when we DO race. But we’re all dues paying team members…and both the team and the sponsors benefit.
I didn’t know you were a Bella. There are a lot of them out this way.
are you the artist formerly known as erik clark?
yes, i had a stalker on the main forum. I had to change my name.
