TdF Spoiler Etiquette? (No spoilers in subject lines - please! please?)

I’m one of those people who actually still enjoys being surprised. I hate movie previews (now) because even when they’re only pretending to give something away, they still give too much away. I haven’t been tracking what’s happening in the Dauphine this week so I can see it happen this weekend on OLN. Yeah, I won’t see the full-length version but I’ll see it “live” just like Phil and Paul. I’m really looking forward to watching the Tour this year, but I’ve been worried recently by posts like “Bottero resurrected: Spoiler Alert.” While I don’t know what happened with Bottero yet, isn’t the Spoiler alert kind of pointless if you’re going to indicate something about what happened in the headline?

Is there any chance of getting most of us to commit to NO SPOILERS (not even “semi-spoilers”) in the subject lines of Tour de France posts? Even something that might not be a spoiler but looks like a spoiler? At least until the race is close to over? It’s really not hard to post a subject line like “Stage Three Crash” without saying who crashed in it (e.g. “Petacchi out of tour in Stage 3 crash”), or “Amazing Team Time Trial” (instead of “CSC destroys field in Amazing Team Time Trial”) or “Discovery Channel Team” (instead of “Discovery Channel Team star of the future XYZ wins Stage 15”) without actually giving anything away as to what person was involved or what happened. And everyone who already knows can just go in and read and post, and the rest of us can remain blissfully ignorant until we’re ready…

We all have busy schedules and lots of us have Tivos now which means we’re not always watching things live. Go ahead and point out that I could just not visit this site (or any other tri site) for a month, but I have an Ironman at the end of July and I’ll want to keep up on things. And yeah, I’m sure some knucklehead will post a spoiler or two. But could we just try? Please?

Go ahead and flame away now…

No.

Based on last year…stay away from ST if you want to be surprised.

There, I’ve spoiled it for you already.

Don’t log into ST for the month of July. The rest of us like to get into work, find out what happened, and discuss how poorly the drapes match the unaerodynamic position of the Tour leaders. And this Tour is going to be anything but boring, so we’ll have a lot to discuss.

Go ahead and discuss… Just do it in the body and not in the subject title. There are LOTS of people out there with DVR’s that like to watch it without knowing the end result.
ST might suffer withdraws if everyone watching TDF on “tape delay” stays away for the month of July. Sounds like a reasonable request.

Exactly - no subject line spoilers is all I’m asking.

Wow. It’s that hard for you to not post it in the subject line. Thanks. I appreciate your ability to compromise. I really do.

No need to worry, I won’t be doing any posting; but I like info as fast as possible as this is one of the places I get it - subject line or not. Sorry.

Thanks for clarifying, sorry for pouncing. Running on no sleep for, let’s see now: about 30 hours. Posting at this point is almost like drunk dialing.

BUMP

I get it with the spoilers, but is it really that hard for you to stay away from ST for a few weeks?

Sorry, I bumped an old thread talking about the same old issue. But yes, I also have an “A” race coming up and I want to know any updates about it. And I am logging into ST for the first time today at 10pm because I didn’t want any spoilers to ruin my fun. But some people just don’t get it and will always post AMAZING NEWS, SO and SO WINS (TDF STAGE SPOILER) and don’t understand they were being inconsiderate. So, rather than to try and correct every post one by one it seemed easier to remind everyone all at once.

Somehow I think that if there was anything critical about your race that you needed to know about, the directors would rely on something other than ST to relay that to you.

All things being equal, can the same protocol be applied in October for Kona? I’d like to wait until it is shown on NBC six weeks later to see who won. ; )

I think both sides have valid arguments in this particular debate. Yes, if you log onto ST or any cycling forum during July, you can expect to see TdF stuff. It’s a fact of life.

However, there’s no reason that we, those of us watching the stage live, can’t (a) avoid putting spoilers in the title and (b) put “spoiler” in the titles of any spoiling posts. Of course, this only works if everyone does it, but we should at least try I think.
