Tapering: Thoughts and Opinions Please

In the past years Eagleman has been an important race but this year I am also doing IMLP (first IM) and sort of training through. Trying to find that balance between staying strong but not being overtired for EM. (Also, since it is a local race there are definitely bragging rights at stake, as well as PR goals from previous years…).

Most of my training distances thus far are well above eagleman distance (80-90M rides and 10-14M long runs, open water swims of couple of miles in the choptank each week) - and I am happy with where I am with respect to training for LP.

I’ll do one more long ride and run this weekend (separated by 1 day and before noon I gather from y’alls input ) then 4-5 days of good taper. Does this sound like a good balance between maintaining fitness for LP and rest for EM? Like someone said, it is better to be 10% overrested than 1% overtrained.

Thanks.

Jude

What’s the water like these days? Any idea of the temperature of the Choptank around Cambridge?

I’m getting ready to post some info on water temp and tidal currents on another thread. Stay tuned…

BTW Swam Wednesday sans wetsuit and was like a bath. Pushing 70 degrees. Four days earlier was 64. Lots of tidal mixing and stuff, but if it is sunny and warm for a few days before the race the water will be warm.

Nothing would make me happier than to ban wetsuits at Eagleman; any chance of 78 degrees. I swim in a lake that was 67 last weekend, and with my sleeveless wetsuit had no overheating issues.

Not a chance. This year the average temp is about 10 degrees cooler than last year - when wetsuits were in full effect.

BTW I’m with you on the no wetsuit swim at EM. A little one foot chop, stiff current, and no wetsuit is just the advantage that this swimmer (aka NAR) needs.

I’ll give water temp updates every few days over the next week… we have a real time monitoring system that is unfortunately off-line right now, but as soon as it is up and running I will post the link.
