Tapering sucks!

Ironman Canada is ten days away and I sitting at my desk not accomplishing very much… twitching and staring off into space…( no that is not what i usually do!) I hate taper!

20 hours last week… 7 this week, next week will be hell!

I love training If only I could like tapering…

Who has figured this out and has good ways to enjoy not doing much when you are in the best shape of your life!

I feel your pain brother…better you than me:-)

Tapering is highly over-rated in my opinion and I don’t like it one bit. However, I hope your taper sets you up for your best race ever.

You’ll share a race report to let us know how things went?

I’ve yet to perfect/realize what the perfect taper for me is, but I don’t think it has anything to do with going from an average of 3 hours a day down to 1 hour a day. If I don’t sweat as much as I normally do my body starts to feel heavy and my mind isn’t as lucid as usual either. So far it seems I race best when I keep overall volume nearly the same, but stay away from long efforts at very high intensities.

I’m curious, what did your 20 hour weeks look like compared to your 7 hour week? Seems like such a drastic change would throw all your systems out of whack and make you feel weird on race day.

20 to 7? thats a pretty big drop. I could see 20 to 10-12 then 7 plus the race. But then again I don’t know what your trianing has been like. Just keep the frequency and intensity up.

thanks for the encouragement… I love racing once the race has started… if only it had started…

I loved doing IMCanada in1999 and look forward to it…

only fear is going downhill fast… training next week will be driving to the downhill sections and riding my bike down to the bottom and then getting a ride in the car home… I did this at lake placid last year and it went really well… hoping for another PB year (but don’t tell anyone)

this week… swim tuesday morning 3000 m… tuesday night run 3 times one mile repeats with warm up and cool down… wednesday 1 hour tempo ride. thursday morning swim 3000m and then ride in the pm… pack friday and then fly to Kelona BC … drive to Penticton on sunday plan for the week 30- 60 minutes a day mostly easy cycling… but down hills!. will golf with the kids… do the tubing ride from lake okanogan to lake skaha… anyother good activities in penticton?

Ideas in Penticton? Check out the Naramata Vineyards. A little wine tasting will keep you calm (?) and the views are breath taking.

IMC is such a great race. Wishing you the very best of luck.

I rented a little suite on the valley side in Naramata !! I’m psyched.

I just started my official taper on Monday… it involves super high intensity stuff every second day …so it keeps me thinking I’m still training hard although since it’s so short, my body will recover almost completely between every hard workout… maybe try that so you aren’t going off your rocker.

Trev

i use the available additional hours to sleep more. And stretch. Very nice!
Otherwise, I agree with doing high intensity on one day and easy the following. I’m usually looking forward to these last 2-3 weeks.
