I have a Tanita BF scale. I like it. Tested out the InnerScan at IMAZ and found it a pretty cool unit…although it was waaaay too optimistic about my bodyfat. (Not meant to be a thread about the product’s reliability)
Full page ad in Triathlete this month…page 25.
Now…if you were a marketing manager at Tanita and were constructing an ad for Triathlete…or any active publication, what would you have for the body fat readout?
5%?
10%?
15%?
20%?
Isn’t over 20 (male) % obese…or is it 25%?
Anyhoo, the readout says 20.1%. I thought that was odd branding of an Ironman product…
tanitas are basically worthless for accurately measuring the the % body fat of highly athletic male and females for too many reasons to list. they can measure wt. pretty good, but the body fat no. is a joke…
I bet they did it because they didnt want to scare away the average woman who’s body fat is probably right around that number. I would guess that many more women then men buy that scale and that majority are women who are not exactly skinny. Of course there are a ton of triathletes who would buy one of these but i doubt we make up even 2% of their customer population plus it probably even gives some of the smaller triathletes some pleasure looking at how small their number is compared to the one in the pics.
The gadget that I found cool during the test I did in IMLP wasn’t my 5.2% body fat but to know how hydrated I was. This is something that I can’t tell by looking in the mirror!!!
I don’t own a tanita scale but to know that hydration number would be accurate for me it would be worth the price.
OK, I’ve had one of these things for a few weeks and feel like I can finally comment on them
Body fat measurement - I think it’s within 2% for me. Right now, I get measurements from 8.5 to 10.5, which is what I had measured with skin fold and underwater weighing. It’s close at least.
Body fat % varies indirectly with body water. My weight doesn’t vary much. If I weigh myself in the morning, I’m over 10 % with about 56% body water (on the low end of normal for an athlete). If I weigh myself before bed, I’m typically 2-3 pounds heavier, have a body water reading of 58% or so, and body fat below 9%. So far I’m happy with it.
