Tall Texan 1/2 IM

Any reports out there for this race? Turns out that a family wedding is going to conflict with the 1/2 that I had planned to do an easy 2 hour drive from my house, so I’m casting about the country for another in the August-September time frame.

I have not done this race, but frequently trained on the run & bike courses when I lived in San Antonio. I have done Buffalo springs & think it is a less difficult race course, the late season race date may or may not help heat wise.

The swim is in Boerne Lake, usually a great place for open water swims & home of the Y100(previous the Advantage) Olympic distance race swim. Other than the year they had lifeguards on jetskis(the lake is closed to power boats) it is a great swim venue for a race. Team Alamo has swim/run bricks on mon/fri evenings during the season.

The bike course is very techincal for a triathlon course around here, be ready to ride hills! No mercy for the untrained- RaceDirector Jim Britton is a primarilly a roadie & owner of two bike shops in the San Antonio Area. I think I may still have the handout with the course map somewhere.

I’ve built a c-trainer of the course, let me know if you want a copy.

I’ve never done the race but I considered it last year. I heard that the race is not run very well. You might want to search the forum for a very old thread on this topic.

I’ve ridden in the area, although not the actual course. It is very hilly. The roads are a little rougher than I like. It is a relatively attractive course if you care about that.

The “Texas Man” 1/2 IM in Dallas is September 12. It’s a first time event put on by Ironhead Race Productions so it should be very well ran. I’ve done the oly race at that venue and can’t imagine that it will be very hilly on either the bike or run but of course it could be hot at that time still.

I have done Tall Texan twice and was not impressed either time. I felt support was very spotty and traffic control on the bike was nearly non-existant. I might as well have been out for a Sunday ride on my own. The bike course is also very confusing, lots of turns (many not marked very well) and some of the roads are really in bad shape.

I will not do this race again and it is only an hour or so away from me. I also would not even consider the full ironman distance race the same producers are starting this year.

I think Texas Man on the same day will be a much better race even tough it is a first year race. Jack Weiss knows what he is doing.
