KD–it’s not an over rationalization. the kid was text messaging, he hit a cyclist and killed the man, will probably get a slap on the wrist. if the same thing happened, and the kid was drunk, same outcome (death of cyclist) the penalty would be much steeper obviously.
why?
kid was driving wrecklessly and took a life. took somebody’s son, father, husband, relative and friend. it’s bullshit. the penalty should be much steeper. perhaps then, people would think twice before driving around wrecklessly text messaging their friends about stupid bullshit.
if there was a consequence, maybe people would be more responsible.
We can agree to disagree on this one; however, when we look at the overall risk involved here (i.e., the kid for ONE time text messages - still kills an individual vs 3,4,5 time drunk driver), the overall risk factor is low.
How?
I believe that ONE instance was enough for that kid to understand his action versus the 3,4,5 time drunk driver who did not.
Sense of responsibility? Let’s be serious now. And that’s something we all have to live with.

I must disagree with your response by adding “reckless driving can also occur while driving impaired; yes.” We are in violent agreement.
I must also add - We must be further wary of the Verizon, T-Mobile, Cingular Worthless lobbyists’ out there. Once we get them under control - only then will the negative statistic for ‘driving while on a mobile’ lower itself.
I’ve got my own opinions on drunk drivers, MADD and SADD types. I feel drunk drivers should take responsibility for their actions; MADD and SADD folks should stop hiding behind the 501(c)(3) statute, while trying to reduce their overhead.
