Specifically what kind of weather does the Dallas area have in January? What are people like on the smaller highways, as in attitudes towards bikers about 30 miles outside of the city? If this is 15 hours from my house, would it be worth abother 5 to keep going south? I’m trying to get away for 10 days or something and run and ride before I go back to life(graduate in december), although if temperatures allowed I’d be happy to bring my wetsuit along and jump in a couple of lakes. You ask why Texas area? warm as it gets without crossing mountains.
Temps in January are from 45-75 degrees depending on the day. You get your asshole driver here and there but I have never had anything worse then a honked horn. There is a large riding community here and giant groups of cyclist can be seen around the Rowlett/Garland suburbs. There are routes around White Rock lake which are nice but crowed so it’s kinda slow. Some very nice bike shops and great food.
Dallas is OK, but Austin is the best tri town between California and Florida. Let the folks at Austin Triathletes and at Austin Tricyclist know you’re coming and what you have in mind. Expect lots of Texas sized hospitality from folks at both places.
Take along a wetsuit and neoprene cap for great swim training at Barton Springs. Be prepared to climb some hills on that bike. Eat at Threadgill’s, Magnolia Cafe, Kerbey Lane Cafe, the Hut, Stay at a downtown hotel like the historic Driskill or the Hyatt Regency.
Or stay at Hotel San Jose, drink coffee at Joe’s, head over to Palvo’s for some rita’s. Then run across the street and have a few at Freddies while you pitch some washer.
