I’m hoping someone can help talk me out of signing up for St. George. It’s the closest to where I live, but it’s still a 9 hour drive. Plus, we have winter here which makes an early season race very bad for me. There are no longer triathlons prior to St. George, so no tune-up/practice races beforehand. Minimal outdoor riding on the bike, no open water swimming.
Have a family and full-time job so travel for other races and/or training isn’t really an option. I’m asking enough of them just to do the Ironman.
So, IM St. George isn’t a good option for me, no? I did the original IM Utah years ago so there’s some sentimentality there even though it’s a different venue, and I’m lured back by the proximity (it’s actually driving distance!) But otherwise it’s all wrong, right?
Well, you wouldn’t be talking about it on ST if you weren’t already convinced you SHOULD sign up … so just get it done and quit worrying about it. I’ve already signed up and several of my friends … so you better hurry up … or next you’ll be worried about it filling up

Unless you were to go as a volunteer…
1.costs nothing but gas
2. no training time away from the family required
3. heck you could even take the family to volunteeer too!! maybe they’ll love the event so much they’ll have you signed up for next year before you know it!
Sign up for the race. But instead of dragging the whole familiy to a race that they don’t have the heart to tell you they don’t want to go to, plan a fun/cheap (Cancun) trip somewhere warm a few months before the race where they can drink margaretas and you can swim in the ocean.
Do an internet search for “Nuclear Radiation St. George Utah” and see how many hits you get. More than 6,400 residents of Utah have filed claims under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) for cancer and other illnesses from atomic fallout and more than $258 million has been paid to residents of Utah. Then again, what do I know, I’m going back to Silverman!
A few years back Sand Hallow Res had some kind of critter in that made everyone itchy. They say it is no longer there but I haven’t been back to a race in that venue to find out.
Two transition area set up sucks for eveyone. For that matter I really don’t see how they are going to fit a bike trans in at that lake. It is a very small place.
The roads down there are rough. Lots of patch work and chip seal.
One word, wind. You might get lucky and get a good day, the temp down there is always good on paper but the wind rips most days. I talking about holy shit its windy kind of wind.
One more word, sand. Sand in everything and everywhere. Sand drifts across the road like snow drifts, sand in your shoes, sand all over chains and cassettes, sand all over water bottles.
One more thing that may or may not bother people, the restaurant choices down there are not great. Last time I was there for a small race I reading the local paper the night beofre and they did a review in the dining section for the olive garden. On a positive note they gave it a glowing review.
Seems ironic when you comment on avoiding a Utah race due to irrad, then sign up for Nevada where all sorts of above ground testing took place … and probably was the upwind source of Utahs exposure. Am I missing something???

Dave ** Like I said, what do I know? However, some people in St. George have complained that the DOE would postpone a test when the winds were blowing towards Vegas, but then they’d go ahead with the test after the winds had shifted towards St. George. FWIW, I wouldn’t hesitate to go to St. George anyway. I was just trying to give the OP another reason to save $550.
Now wer’re getting to some serious issues … my friends and I are already making plans to bring our own beer for post race festivities. We hear that St George has the morman blight in regards to beer availability and we won’t take chances!

Do Silverman instead…it’s in November so minimal cold weather training. It’s relatively close to St. George so not too much added driving time. It’s a fantastic race. Entry fee is cheaper and schwag is (probably) better.
For those suggesting Silverman as an alternative, I remind them (and anyone else considering it) that the weather there 3 out of 4 years has been horrible. Windy and very cold.
reminds me of the one and only time I went on a ski vacation in Utah—they are really against alcohol–or at least they have discovered the best ways to charge the highest price for that deadly sin–one price for the setup(equal to what you pay elsewhere for the entire drink and a second price for the miniature from the package store, best t-shirt slogan was “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you may be in Utah”
.

Windy and very cold. ** You’re correct, but that’s part of the attraction! Mostly I prefer Silverman because I can train outside in warm weather. I did the April version of IMAZ twice, and it seemed like all of my training was indoors, outdoors in the dark, or outdoors in the cold.
