For whatever reason, I woke up this morning completely ****ing stressed about TSA and flight delays/cancellations. Leaving this Thursday - SLC @ 7am to ATL, ATL to Panama City Beach. Need those good vibes fellow ST’rs…
IMFL was my first and I have a lot of nostalgia for it. If you’re concerned the only thing you can do (because worrying won’t actually do anything for you) is to grab the bull by the horns and take an extra day off and switch travel to go a day earlier. At least that way you have a buffer built in and its something actually in your control.
From what I heard IM is somewhat helpful with airline issues if you can’t make the 48 hour check in…unless things have changed.
Other than that…weather and race day conditions seem massively favorable for Saturday. Safe trip and let er rip!
I just flew in and out of Orlando with the family and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary with respect to air travel. If anything we sped through security lines faster than I expected. No delays to our flights nor any other flights at the airport that I noticed.
yeah dude…it’ll be my 3rd time and weather looks AMAZING. Can’t go earlier…daughter has State XC meet tomorrow. Her first…me second! Thanks @Yeeper !
Likewise had family flying into MCO on the weekend no issues. Flyng back tomorrow with nothing noted yet. Hopefully you have a time buffer to get to your connecting flight in ATL and you should be fine.
Ahh yea that’s a tough one. I don’t envy the call with her race on the line.
If it’s any consolation I’ve had a lot of family flying lately and they haven’t had any issues.
I did FL twice and really want to give it one more go. I did the old course though, loved that run.
You should be fine. Even if you don’t have Pre-check, TSA is not worth stressing over. Just give yourself some extra time as 7am is busy in SLC.
According to Delta, your flight from SLC has a great on-time record. I can’t be sure, but your plane may spend the prior night in SLC, so even if the plane was late arriving the night before, it should be ready to go the next morning.
The weather in ATL looks ok for Thursday. A little breezy, but that should not cause any serious delays. If you’re on Delta, it looks like you’ve got at least 2.5 hours for your connection. Even with a delay, you’ll very likely make your connection.
Flying on Thursday is plenty of time for a race Saturday. I’ve regularly flown in for Ironman’s the day before the event and so far no issue. Positivity is the way through life.
Enjoy the heck out of the race also.
Flew last week with no issues whatsoever. If TSA is worrying you, just show up early.
You should be fine. I commute via plane so round trip every week. Since shutdown, I’ve been on 9 flights and no delays due to TSA or ATC. You’re flying days in advance and looks like you’re flying Delta which has big presence in SLC and of course based at ATL. If there is a delay, lots of backup flights.
Flights won’t be a problem. Sharks will. There have been four shark attacks in the last two days right next to the pier. But as long as you don’t splash much, you should be fine.
I’m just kidding. I guess it is in the nature of a triathlete to stress over things they can’t control. You will be fine.
Multiple flights last week - no issues.
We’re happy to help. This is the closest that many of us have come to a triathlon in a decade.
Alright @jhornebx Don’t disappear on us. How was your flight and your race? Did you make the top 10? At what mile were you on the bike when you were wishing for at least one hill to coast down?
It was a beautiful day. Cool, sunny and hardly any wind. I hope you had a good race.
You beat me to the punch. Had planned on sending an update on a couple threads…this being one of them. Still here in PCB enjoying the continued nice weather. You’re right…race day was beautiful. Hard to overheat in 67. Didn’t make the top 10 but grabbed a 10min IM PR and was REALLY REALLY hoping to go another 10min quicker for my overall time. But, I’m very happy with the day and don’t think I could’ve done anything differently to change the end result. Bike was fine but I was ready to be done with the bike returning on Front Beach Rd. That stretch felt long for some reason.
As far as travel…it was an absolute breeze. Both flights left on-time and both flights landed early. I actually bought a small case of full size Hershey bars and stapled a “thank you” note on each one and handed them out to TSA folks first, and others who looked like they could use a little chocolate…
