After a 4 year layoff from pool racing I decided to jump into my regional masters champs this past weekend. A guy that I have raced OW with many times, never beating of course, jumped in, I’m sure un tapered and did the 3 distance events. He is now 40 years old and I thought that it would be instructive how one is to pace distance swimming for maximal results. Take a look at his 1650 here;
And to add to GaryHall’s thread, Alex takes a lot of strokes to get across the pool, more than just about anyone that is unlucky enough to be in a final with him…I’m guessing that this 40 year old is faster that the best ITU swimmers out there too, so there is hope folks!!! He also went 9;32 for the 1000 and 4;38 for the 500. Would love to see him shaved and tapered for these events, maybe masters nationals in a couple weeks. Most likely I will get to see his feet for a 100 or so in the next ocean race…)-;
Those are really good times- that is Alex Kostich- he won a medal at the Pan American Games in swimming and is still an amazing open water swimmer- not surprised at all that he still has it!
Ya, check out his 200 splits, except for the 1st one with the dive, all within about .2sec the entire race. And 1st 500 4;46.3, last one 4;48.2. That is some serious even pacing. The masters OW guys better plan on the 2nd rung of the podium this year!!!
