That’s a little surprising to me. I mean, it seems par for the course, but of all the races to not skip you’d think San Fran and Vegas would be the ones she would definitely hit! But she’s going to miss them both this year. That’s bizarre.
For Pros it’s much harder to walk off the course (esp. while in the lead) with all the cameras, etc. than to DNS. There is a huge temptation to start the run and “see how it goes,” which in her case could lead to a much more severe injury and a much longer recovery.
Pohjalainen has not accepted her T100 LLV start slot so that’s rolled to the top (effectively) of the wait list: Astle, who is now showing on the start list. She may have traveled anyway, I guess.
Yes, another match up with Taylor would have been super exciting. We really don’t know if Taylor was running all out in Ibiza or if she was holding back a significant amount knowing she had such a solid lead off the bike. Saturday’s weather forecast is still looking nice and cool compared to the long lasting heat that has been in the area for so long.
Well Julie Derron is here in Lake Las Vegas… so I assume she is racing. The start list seems incorrect as it currently shows Ruth Astle on the list but she’s back home in the UK…
That news just increased the excitement factor a great deal in the women’s race! Perhaps we’ll get to see if Taylor was actually running at her limit at Ibiza.
What we see is Knibb is pretty consistent and Ashley can throw down a pretty epic run occasionally, but otherwise she’s close to or slower than Knibb.
Since Knibb has rarely been pushed on the run outside if ITU, and everyone else behind her is always giving it a full send to catch people behind her; Knibb very certainly has some real untapped potential.
Looking at the Olympic relay splits, when Knibb was motivated to run for a medal after crushing the bike she ran her split in 5:38 while Derron ran her split in 5:32.
I’m not suggesting they are on parity, but if Derron bridges up to Knibb on the run after burning a bunch of matches to get close on the bike, I think the money would still be on Knibb to break her.
It’s massively to Knibb’s credit with how “particular” an athlete she is that she’s so consistent. I’d assume all the random chaos that happens at and around events would reflect in performance swings, but she does seem to soldier on. (or she just has enough of a gap that her random variations are never exposed as weakness)
Does anyone know where we can get an updated, accurate start list? I’m looking at the one below from the T100 website, but it has LCB and Sodaro. As I understand it, both withdrew.
The PTO seem rather slow to update their start list. Here is the World Tri one:
Astle was effectively top of the wait list, has rolled on but Thursday am said she’s said ‘no’.
Krüger is next on the wait list. Derron is another 4 down the wait list (but someone’s said she’s ‘actually’ in LLV!) At this stage, the wait list is queen and out of hands of the PTO aiui.
Saw that Sodaro/West/Hering ‘marketing opportunity’ out at Nellis AFB. I guess Sodaro, who has already failed to meet her T100 contract commitment: now 4 regular season events: she’s managed two (Singapore and London), is ticking the box for PTO.
In the same way as they got Neumann to star in San Francisco in that video: ‘Why I haven’t raced since signing my T100 contract and haven’t said why’ (injury did not rehab at the rate expected),
At least Haug is trying after missing the first 3 races for reasons various.
Is Sodaro reinjured after her great race in Nice? She is qualified for Taupo. We’ll see.
The wait list is dated 11 Nov and does not feature McElroy. I guess USAT may have added him to it late on to allow him to to be pulled up (as Noodt’s replacement).
There is a ‘T100 Las Vegas’ thread (which I shall copy this to).
Insta posts show her holidaying etc. I guess after the hard yards of 2022/3/4 she is decompressing (and supported Tom in his UTMB campaign). T100 London was a rushed experiment (I saw her TT frame before it was built up) but (who’d have thort it) riding TT for 80km is a different beast (she stuck with LCB for the first 3 laps), even for a super strong rider like Sophie.
I expect she’ll invest the hard yards on the bike over the winter and go middle distance next season, building up her palmares/PTO Ranking points, qualifying for Marbella and earn a wildcard (or two) in the T100 Tour races if things go well.
In my view she has greater potential than Spivey (not dissing TS, merely as a benchmark).
