T. Demerly-Storm Chaser

Tom, since you fancy photography, grab your camera and hop in the Subaru. Looking at the National Weather Service Web site, you’ve got some sweet, possible tornadic storms rolling your way… I/we are eagerly awaiting pictures.

You can always tell a good friend by how they send you out to take photos of tornados.

Wow, I have my EOS 10D on my desk and three lenses handy. I am ready. Thanks for the heads up. If I get anything I will post it.

I saw my first tornado this January in Curacao- a 700 foot water spout, two actually right next to one another. Awesome.

Yep Tornado Warning for Washtenaw county until 3:00. On its way to Dearborn…

SuperDave the Felt rep has just arrived and reported storms from Ann Arbor to Dearborn. We have thunder and light rain here now.

We saw the storm warning on line.

I left my house for a ride at 1:00 and it was nice, when i got about 12 miles from home my wife called and said “what are you doing” i told her riding and she said "dumb ass, get home there is a tornado watch, so i headed home and got caught in some nasty high winds and hail the size of small golf balls, it almost blew my off my bike. the aero wheels are a bitch to ride in tornado;s. i made it home now i sit and wait for it to pass. thank god i made it home.

A few years back, I watched a Tornado come straight at the house I was in, somehow it hopped over the house and ripped the side off the library across the street. It was scary as hell.

Don’t kill yourself like this guy almost did…

From Tornado project online:

Stormchaser David Drummond found himself inside a multiple vortex tornado in Clay County, Nebraska. The tornado formed over and around him as he was driving. It was all captured on a chaotic video that can been seen here. His anemometer recorded 108 mph.

Yet another reason I’m glad Ilive in the desert southwest.

Temp: 90 degrees

Humidity: 12%

Winds: Breezy at 14mph

What are the chances of getting hit by lightning on a (moving) bike?

Don’t know the answer to that one. The NWS has a section about lightning…they do mention cycling.

I think it passed without incident. It is cool (73) and overcast now.

What are the chances of getting hit by lightning on a (moving) bike?

TJ56,

Much less than on a stationary bike. Its always harder to hit a moving object.

And forget about being safe because your on rubber tires (insulated from the road) like in a car. The whole thing about being safe in a car in an electrical storm has to do with the fact that you are basically surrounded in a metal capsule and any electrical charge applied to the outside of that capsule is neutral or zero on the inside of that capsule. No similar encasement on a bike. Your just a sorry ass moving target waiting to be struck.

Train to ride faster so you can race ahead of the storm.

Good luck.
