Is it co-ed? Or could it be? The one “lady” on the US sure looked like a dude in drag.

Depends on the competition. Some have a mixed pairs event, and the guys can be quite good. But the synchro federations feel like one reason they’ve been able to stay in the Olympics is because it’s a women’s sport there, and helps the overall gender numbers balance out. So they’re reluctant to ask for including male-friendly events because they’re worried that if they pushed too much, the IOC would drop synchro altogether.
I wasn’t sure if it was one of those events where men and women could both enter but usually only women entered. Sort of like Field Hockey in the US. In most schools guys could play if they wanted to, but the potential ridicule of wearing the kilt keeps them away.
