Today I went for my long run of the week, about 12 miles. Felt great all throughout the run. Now, about 7 hours later, the medial side of my knee has a swollen spot. It’s below the joint line kind of on the bump of the tibia. Hurts a smidge when I walk and when I lock my knee out but not significantly, but the swelling is quite noticeable. It also looks like the knot you’d raise if you got a bump on your head.
I’ve got a number of races coming up with the end goal of my first half marathon early in December. I don’t want to derail any of them by ignoring an injury (but don’t want to lay off training if I don’t have to either) but I’m wondering what exactly this is and what I should do about it.
This is the knee I had an ACL reconstruction on a year ago, if that makes any difference.
Had the same thing happen to me about a week and a half ago. I ran on it a couple of days, it brought me to a halt on day 3. It’s been a week since then, better but not completely.
You might google ‘pes anserine’ bursitis. Or it could be a bit of tendonitis as the hamstring and adductor tendons all attach there in the medial meniscal area and below. One of the guys I saw suspected some medial hamstring issues, and working on those with a lacrosse ball and some hamstring stretches seems to help. It never hurts to see someone that you trust, but I’d also be willing to be that the first diagnosis that you might get from some docs is a tear in the meniscus.

Are you still trying to run or have you stayed off it?
I had a bout with pes anserine bursitis while rehabbing my knee and this doesn’t seem quite the same – no pain while trying to do a hamstring curl, for example, and that would hurt pretty bad when it was sore before. One of the others could be the problem though.
Have a planned day off tomorrow and I guess I’ll see how it goes. Was planning to do a hilly run on Sunday because my 10k next weekend is hilly, but maybe I should ease up a bit on that.
I am an Ortho sports doc. Agree, my first thought is pes anserine bursitis. If swelling is below joint line, this is classic.
If it doesn’t hurt much and goes away in a day or so, probably just over did it. I’d ice the area. Should be be OK to run if it isn’t hurting. If it does hurt or impair your ability to run, I’d take a few days off of runnning, consistently ice it, and cross train (bike or swim). If this becomes a persistent occurrence, go see a sports practioneer.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been icing it, so that’s good. Still a little swollen this a.m. but not really any pain. Hopefully I’ll be good to go tomorrow.
