I’m thinking of changing our the rear wheel (Easton Vista) on my tri bike (P2SL) with a rear wheel (Krysium Elite) from an old road bike. The Easton seems like an okay training wheel, bullet proof, but a bit heavy. I have an Ultegra 9-speed cassette on the Krysium and will need to switch that out with the DA 10-speed currently on the Easton Vista. First question: is this a good idea to change these wheels? Second question: Any issues with putting the DA 10-speed cassette on the freehub that is currently housing the Ultegra 9-speed? I will need to buy the tools and assume I will need a chainwhip and lockring tool. No Local Bike shop. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
The 9 and 10 speed hub are the same. Just the spacing of the cogs are different. You are right that you will need a cassette removal tool and chain whip. I train Ksyrium equipes and am happy with them. The elite is a better wheel than mine.
That is an easy change when you get the tools and yes you will need those two. No difference in the hub for the 9 speed and 10 speed to my knowledge. Takes about two minutes or less to change and you shouldn’t really have to make an RD changes to shift correctly.
I picked up a inexpensive chain whip and lockring tool at Nashbar about a year ago - simple to use.
best of luck
