I just bought the kit to change my mountain bike tires to go tubeless with Stans. Any advice before I try it. I’m a little nervous about getting it all set up and sealed correctly.
Are you using tubeless rims, or just converting old rims with Stans? If you’re converting old rims make sure you do a good job on the rim tape. Stans is the best. I use it in my MTB tires as well as road tubulars.
Good luck - it’s well worth the change.
Stans/Tubeless is where its at!
It’s pretty easy. I’ve been running Stan’s about 3 years now. Just follow the directions on their website. I have done it before with a floor pump, but it is a LOT easier with an air compressor. So far, I haven’t found a single tire that doesn’t work with it (I have 517s), but they list tires that are supposed to work better. Lastly, I seem to get better results with liquid Joy than Dawn soap…but I may just be the product of effective marketing. Good luck.
Make sure your tires are compatible. Stans highly recommends against using WTB tires for conversions. I LOVE my WTB Weirwoves, so no Stans for me!
you might need a really high volume pump if not a compressor to get the tire bead to seat the first time. Depends on the rim and the tire. If you you can’t get it to seat with your floor pump and don’t have a compressor a CO2 will often work, BUT don’t put any stans in there until after you use the CO2 as the stans will harden due to the CO2. Just soap the bead, CO2 it up, then deflate (make sure the bead stays seated), peel back a small section, pour in Stans and pump up again.
LOOOOVE tubeless, sub 30psi front and rear and lots more traction and zero pinch flats.
I have an air compressor (well, my husband does)! We will be working on them one evening this week!
thanks to everyone for all the tips
If you follow the tutorials on the Stan’s site you can’t go wrong.
I have Stansed up quite a few mountain bike tires using the rubber strips, Stans rims, UST rims and with the DT swiss tubeless system and havent had any problems. Using a compressor is definately where its at however for ease of inflation.
Make sure you follow the instructions on the website, I usually dont use soap and water with a compressor, but rocking the wheel back and forth while it is sitting both vertically and horizontally to distribute the sealant all over the inside is reccomended.
I have had the best results with Maxxis standard tires.

If you are using a UST rim/tyre it is very easy. I have used various tyres and had no problem with my floor pump. I have been using it for 3 years and have never had a punture with it either, amazing stuff, wish I could use it on the road bike,
