I have been spending much of my ST-time scanning the classifieds the last couple months so I’m not up on what is likely a basic question. With that apology, when going from 10 speed to 11 speed, what are my wheel options? That is, do I have to buy new rear wheels? Not too concerned with my trainer wheels as those are pretty cheap. I have an 2011 (non-FC) zipp 808 rear and a 10 speed zipp disc. Is there any way to make the disc 11-speed compatible?
The easy way would be to put a campy 11 speed freehub on it, and use campy cassettes. As campy 11s cassettes are compatible with shimano and sram gruoppos.
For trainer wheel you can use a 10-spd cassette on 11-spd system if you stay in middle cogs. It’s not perfect but close enough.
Wheels Manufacturing makes a Shimano 10-to-Camp-11 conversion hub. They work great.
Would this work on the disc? I am not clear on which components are interchangeable. Can you replace the axle & spline into the disc’s hub shell?
The freehub is interchangeable between shimano and campy without any other changes.
Would this work with 2010 Zipps as well? I heard there was a cutoff year somewhere in there for 11-speed upgrade.
Yes. It is a simple matter of using a campy 11sp freehub and cassette rather than the shimano/sram version.
Thanks a lot for the advice. I was expecting to have to throw down a lot of cash when Shimano did a warranty replacement and gave me the new Di2 system.
