Switch from Perpetuem to Infinit?

I am figuring out my nutrition for this season and have considered switching from perpetuem to infinit. I’ve generally been happy with perpetuem, but I occasionally have stomach problems. The ability to make your own formula, including BCAA, is interesting. Also, the whey protein may be easier on my stomach than the Soy in perpetuem. I will of course try it on long training sessions, but was curious if anyone had made this change and what were the results. Thanks

I am not a big fan of perpetuem, so any move away from it seems like a good idea to me…

whey protein during or before a ride is not the greatest idea for most people as it causes an increase in ammonia (then leading to lactic acid). Kinda dumb to put this in a drink that is going to be used during an exercise where there is lactic acid. Whey is great after the workout.

John,

Perpeteum has soy protein not whey protein. I use it and it appears to work okay, but the taste is not the greatest.

Pain is unavoidable, misery is optional.

Barefoot,

i know the Hammer stuff doesn’t have whey - they have it dialed in. most other companies use whey since it gets rated higher as a source of protein but the downside is the ammonia creation.

Okay. My mistake. What do you use/recommend for Ironman fueling?

Perpetuem worked well enough for me last year at IMLP, but last week at Mooseman 1/2 I didn’t enjoy it at all used as “perpetupaste” (4 scoops Perp. + 1/3 cup water) in a flask on the run. I rely on H.E.E.D. up through 3 hours, then try to switch to something with protein in it after 3 hours. I can usually make Accelerade work, as it has a markedly different taste than either H.E.E.D. or Perpetuem. I appreciate this post, however, as I too am considering giving infinIT a try.

You can send a personal mail from this forum to Mike Folan president of Infinit (I think he goes by that handle) to get some input.

Hello all. We use whey because it contains more AA’s than soy (second only to egg). Ammonia creation and L-glutamine is a fairly recent discussion. I personally have been using whey for quite a while and have has great performance. I work with a number of very high-level coaches, nutritionists like Kim Brown and EP’s that have chosen whey for their long distance formulations. It does not seem to be an issue for them. It is possible that we might give you the option to choose between soy and whey at a future date, we are discussing it now.

Hammer is a great company and in no way want this to be misconstrued as a slam, but the comments that I have heard is that their products can be too thick and can cause some digestive issues. Many of the athletes that I have spoken to are forced to mix or cut it with something else. Also they are not the happiest with the level of flavor.

Normally I recommend my athletes use 3-5 grams of protein in a 20-ounce bottle. That is a ratio of around 12-14 to 1 carbs to protein. Most of the research that I have read is showing that protein helps in recovery and as an additional source of calories, but it does NOT have to be at the higher levels that some products contain. Because the level of proteins is quite low in this formulation, you will not have the problems with digestion. Obviously you can set you level of flavor and electrolytes where you want them so it will taste how you want it.

Again, with what we do this is up to you the amount of protein that you put in your drink. But most of our customers like the lower levers and the way that it performs for them.

I hope that helps!

I think that you are trying to compare two different drinks together. That is, one is a “food” drink the other is an electrolyte drink. Yes Perpetuem has electrolytes in the drink; I think the main purpose is energy. I think the main purpose of the Infinit drink is electrolytes. I know you can “customize” the drink to give you some higher calories and protein. I have been using hammer for many years and my sister and I are trying the Infinit products out. She has been and avid e-load user. In my experience, the problem usually stems from either too much or too little calories consumed as the workout progresses. Both can create stomach problems. Some folks do some make some pastes-like mixes. The important thing here is to ration the proper amount so that you are getting the right amount of calories. It is easy to consume too many calories with the paste strategy. Taste…well the funny thing is I do not care about that any more. Perpetuem tastes just fine. I like heed because it is very light and not sweet at all. The cool think about Hammer is that you can customize your electrolyte level without getting more calories.

Last year at IMCDA I did perpetuem and water with enduralyte capsules. When you do drink your calories from Perpetuem or another high calorie drink, you still have to drink several ounces of water. Forgetting to do so could also cause stomach problems. On the run I switched to Hammer gel, heed and more enduralytes. I think it is important to be consistent in whatever program you are doing. Learn what you body needs and find a product to help you meet that need. There are many on the market these days.
