Swimming with Garmin 910xt

Hi all,

Just curious how people have your garmin 910xt set up for swimming indoors. How do you have your data fields set up?

I did my first swim this morning - all was great, however the data field I was using “Interval Distance” would not register my first 25m. At the end of each ‘interval’ the watch was off by 25m(registering 175m instead of 200m). when i uploaded to Garmin Connect all looked good. Spoke with Garmin tech support and they said that I’m confused and should be using “Distance - Last Interval”.

to me that doesn’t make much sense. if i’m doing a longer interval, and lose track of my lengths would like to look down and see where i’m at within that ‘interval’.

or maybe i’m just confused?

I’ve used the lap swim feature 3 times and am not impressed. It consistently loses anywhere from 25 to 50 yards per 1000 yards of swimming. Doesn’t matter if I do that swimming in one block or in 10x100. I’m not stopping in the middle of the pool or anything. In the future I’m just going to go back to what I did with the 310xt which is to set it Open Water swimming but turn off the GPS and then fill in the lap lengths in my log aferwards.

I have found this also but when you transfer the data it is not that hard to pick out where the error occured. Usually you have a length that is twice and long time wise as it should be. I must not be that detail oriented because I can still tell if I’m improving or not.

Oh I can pick the laps out too. I’m not saying it’s really a problem. I’m just saying that the new feature has not added any value to the watch for me.

So I reading this correctly, that despite these possible error(s) it accurately tracks the total amount of yards swam each time?

It **almost **accurately tracks the amount of yards you swim. You will likely need to make minor corrections.

In my experience so far, as long as you are doing some kind of stroke using your arms, its pretty accurate. I’ve seen it miss distance when I try to do kick drills because the arms aren’t moving so the watch has no idea what is going on

I don’t do anything but freestyle – definitely no drills – so I was surprised to see my watch losing yards every once in a while. I’ve always thought my stroke was fairly even and constant. I’ve been told more than once that I have pretty good form. But who knows maybe I’m flailing all over the pool…

For what its worth, I jave over 50,000 trds on mine and only once was it off…25yrds…Maybe I am lucky
.

As an example I swam 2200 meters last night and my Garmin said I swam 2125. I had 3 lengths that had twice the time as the others so I know that they counted as 25 meters when in fact is was 50.

I’ve done about 10 or so swims and it’s been perfect every time. I don’t do drills and haven’t done any intervals just continuous swimming w/ flip turns. I have it auto scroll between 2 pages with first page having just total distance and 2nd page having total time.

The thing to note is when you look at the watch during the swim it will always be 25 yds or one pool length short but when you finish and it hit stop the distance is accurate.

I’m hoping in an update we will get the ability to having swimming with auto laps so post swim I can analyze splits on a per 100yd basis rather than just 25 yards.

So let me get this straight… you people bought a $500 watch to count laps? LOL… Triathletes are the DUMBEST athletes out there…

That’s it exactly. Not only did we decide to pay $100 (or $50) over the list price, but we did it for for the swimming laps feature only. None of us use the GPS mileage tracking, heart rate, or watts.

Watts, eh… as accurate as the iBike. Have fun with your lap counter!

Yes, god forbid anyone might be actually using this as a head unit for their powertap, quark, etc., we all know those are just as inaccurate as the ibike.

lap counter? God forbid I get it wet… I just bought mine to look “cool” and to make sure everyone around me knows I can afford the latest and greatest gear.
Besides, the placebo effect of spending that much for a lap counter drops my 100’s by at least 30 seconds and my run pace by a good minute.
DAMN it looks cool. Which really is all that counts in triathlon.

That’s nothing. Some pay that much in a few months or less to have someone tell them to swim, bike and / or run when they could do it themselves for free. Idiots!!

Yeah, I don’t get coaching for slow people either.

In the 50 meter pool where I do my swim workouts, you can easily spot the triathletes from the pure swimmers / Masters. The former wear watches and check their splits looking at their wrists. The Masters / pure swimmers don’t wear anything on their wrists and just look at the analog wall clock.

Not that there’s anything wrong either way.

I swam for the first time with mine and had the opposite problem where the watch counted 5.3 k instead of the 4 i did? Any suggestions?
