Swimming in running shoes...and then running?!

Please help me keep my toes…on my feet! I’ve signed up for a race involving 38km of running, 10km of swimming, and 16km of biking. Interesting thing is that the running and swimming follow one another repeatedly. Jonas Colting shares his race experience on Slowtwitch:

Given about 40 transitions, a considerable amount of time could be saved by swimming in your running shoes. Many teams use this strategy, but I’ve never attempted anything like this and would like to steepen the slope of my learning curve in training, more so for my feet and wallet than speed. Please share any experiences with running trails/adventure racing requiring some serious water drainage from your shoes. I’ve read other great threads on blister prevention. Any threads on running in a wetsuit for 38km? Holy crap, this is hilarious!

Peace…and keep on keepin’ on…

Running Shoes? Puhhleeese!

You need to do the whole event in Bike shoes.

Ahhh… finally a chance to recommend this shoe solution.

I’ve spoken to someone that did a marathon in them… with no socks.

Obviously, wet socks wouldn’t work, but these shoes seem to work well without socks, can be wet, and shouldn’t slide around much sense they’re suppose to be form fitting.

Really… I have no clue. But this would be my first idea. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for no blisters.

The “time saved” from not having to change in and out of shoes will be negated by the fact that they’ll slow down your swimming, I would think.

I swam in my running shoes at Survival of the Shawangunks. I felt like it was no problem. I just wore socks also to prevent blisters and the first few steps were a bit squishy, but I did not feel like it was that big a deal swimming.

I have read about them. Are you sure that they are not sponsoring this race? it seems like the perfect application.

Yes you can swim in shoes. Socks and the lightest racing flats you can run the distance in and that are sufficiently protecting your feet. Nothing gained if you slash your feet open on rocks and barnacles.
I have also seen people do these kind of races in surfing booties or barefoot.

I personally would advice against running in a wetsuit.
If it is somewhat chilly, I’d look into DeSoto’s offeringes for vests and bottoms. Knickers (vest) could make sense if the temps are appropriate.
There is no golden rule on what to wear.
Depends on length of swim/run legs and your comfort level. Makes no sense to change for a 5’ swim, but it might make sense for a 30’ crossing.
Every choice in this kind of races has it up- and downsides.
And neither of them will give you the win, but could well leave you DNF.
I’d suggest you design a detailed strategy for each and every leg if you want to be in the running.
