My understanding is that TTL is closed until, I believe, the day before the race. I see the only practice time available is 9-11AM on Sat.
Does anyone know of any places, open water or pool, to swim a couple of times in the days leading up to the race? I can swim at Luke AFB, but it is way too far from my hotel. I’m staying off Baseline and I-10. I’ve done a search and couldn’t find any tips. Would rather not pay $10 for a stinking “drop-in” fee to some health club or masters practice to do 1500-2500 EZ on my own. Is the public able to get into the pools at ASU?
I was out there for a month this summer and got in a few swims while I was there. I have a YMCA membership and found one in Scottsdale (Valley of the Sun I think…) that was close by and honored the YMCA Away program, good for 4 or 5 free visits. I think they had a day rate too.
I also was told there was a swim club in the same vicinity with a low drop in fee. I don’t remember the name though.
I liked it there. After about a week it was driving me nuts looking at all that flat open terrain without my bike so I had it shipped. So there I was commuting all over the place on a tri-bike. Good times. Got in one good ride into the hills one day when the fun center was having the floors waxed.
i swim at cactus aquatic center in scottsdale. it’s on scottsdale rd and cactus. look at their schedule, some days they change the lanes around and go long course. otherwise there’s about 20 lanes of 25 yds each. it’s either $2 or $3 to get in and swim just about whenever. i think (its been a few months since i was out there) there’s a masters practice every day around lunch time.

Thanks in advance!
ASU is probably your best close bet. For OW, I’d recommend Butcher Jones cove. A bit of a drive, but a nice no wake cove area to swim. And, if you want to make it a double workout, from the parking lot up (And I mean UP) to the turnoff at the road is just about dead on 4 miles.
Armed Forces Tri Champs last April was 52, year before, in June, was 59. 59 was tolerable and better position out of the water. 52 was unbearable and much, much worse swim.
I hear you. Stop by the Aquaman booth at the expo and pick up a neoprene cap from my friend Emmanuel…that will help a lot under the thin cap they give you…
