Swimming before IM Florida

Just wondering if anyone can give me some hints on where you can swim before IM Florida? I realize the ocean is right there, but if the surf is up I’d like another option. Any suggestions?

Cheers
Sean

I dout the surf will be up. If I am correct, it is on the west coast of FL and unless there is a hurricane, there ain’t goin to be any surf, trust me.

If surf is up race day, will you swim somewhere else?

The Gulf is pretty benign mostly, so I would recommend swimming in it just to get the feel for race day…unless the conditions are truly dangerous—fact is, you don’t know what race day will bring and race week you will have plenty of company out there.

Edgewater pool is the biggest around that I’ve seen. Lots of trigeeks doing their workouts there in the AM. But, still pretty small. Perhaps 40m from one side of the clover leaf to the other. Pretty shallow as well.

I remember my wife racing in 2000 and the surf was big enough to scare off many age groupers from getting through the break…no I’m not afraid of surf, but when I’m trying to get a workout in I find it easier when I’m not gulping water. I remember world cup swimmers in 2000 swimming 56 minutes so unless the swim location has changed there is a chance the surf will be up?

Thanks for the idea on the pool

There’s a nice new pool at Frank Brown Park on the north side of US 98

The Gulf is normally very calm, but a storm as far away as the Gulf of Campeche can make the surf seriously kick up.

Thank you

Here is where I and about 2200 other participants swam before the race…http://i2.tinypic.com/5zp6flx.jpg

I’d worry more about “Bull Sharks” than surf.

As long as you’re talking close to shore, the drunk idiots on jetskis are far more of a threat than the sharks are and drunk idiots on jetskis season normally ends around October 15.
