Swimmers Tongue....from ocean swimming

I did a 5 mile ocean swim recently and when i finished, my tongue was numb (just the front tip and the sides) and it still feels funny (sort of a cross between it being burnt and if I bit it)…anyone know why?

Don’t lick the jellies…

That’s weird I have never had nor heard of that one before. I would check the environmental agency local website before going to the doc’s.

I got a few little jelly/manowar stings on my legs, but pretty sure I didn’t get any in my mouth. As soon as I got out is when noticed my tongue was numb (and when I tried to talk, I had a hard time talking)

Pretty common. It takes my mouth and tongue about a week to get used to the salt water – and then a few days to get used back to the pool chlorine again. I presume you hadn’t been in sea water for quite some time?

No, I swim in the ocean about once a week…not for 2 hrs and 20 min though…but I’ve done 1+ hour swims pretty regularly training for this swim.

I’m not terribly worried about it, I’m not worried about it at all really, just wondering why?

The salt from the saltwater is absorbed through the soft tissue in your mouth and can cause minor swelling and/or dull sense of taste/touch. Nothing to worry about.

If your tongue feels like its covered in very small bumps then it could be thrush. I used to get it when I went to the beach.
