I recently moved and my work schedule does not really fit with any Masters programs in my area, unless I want to swim and run/bike after work (doubt I can get a long enough break in there and I have a life I need to take care of, but I ramble…).
So after a lifetime of coached workouts with a number of people swimming the same workout in my lane, I have to fly solo for a while.
My question is does any one know any good resources for swim workouts, I suck at making them up on my own and have a tendency to cheat myself. Any websites, books, or even people (coaches etc…) that anyone knows about where I can get workouts from, preferably which are updated often.
Janet Evans has recently written a very good book, full of good workouts and training programs for different levels. Ironically it’s called Total Swimming but doesn’t have anything to do with TI.
Gale Bernhardt’s Workouts in a Box - wide variety of workouts for drills, speed and endurance that are printed on small laminated cards that you can leave at the end of your lane.
I’ll 2nd using a swimming book (or better still, a coach) as work-outs should be specific target weaknesses - otherwise they are just junk miles. Understand what you need to do before you do it.
Chech this web site out. I have been using this with great success. Totally free. User based profile setup which take 10 minutes. From there you put your goal race in, OWS, how long the race is a few additional parms and your off.
I send an email to a grouplist out most Mondays with 2 or 3 swim workouts. Just email me with “subscribe swimgroup” in the header of your email if you’d like to be added.
I don’t even know what they mean when they say “on 1:30”. Does that mean you have to complete the set by that time? What happens if you don’t complete the set in that time? Are you supposed to do this continually or with breaks in between? This language always p’s me off.
“on 1:30” means the interval is one minute and thirty seconds. if you go 1:10, then you get :20 rest. if you go 1:20, then you get :10 rest. if you go 1:29, then you touch and go and HTFU so you make the next one.
I second USMS.org and Gale Bernhardt’s Workouts for Triathletes. I use USMS when I want an IM workout & use GB’s book for most other workouts. GB’s workouts average 3000 yards for the long course training and USMS range - with some upwards of 4000 yards.
