Swim problems

Alright, about 2 weeks ago I posted on here asking for general help with my swim training for an 800 M swim leg in a sprint race in April. At the time my workouts consisted of about a 100 M warmup, 8 x 50 Free on 30 sec. rest, 3 x 100 M with a pull buoy, and about a 100 M cooldown. Now, with a little help and some time to get over a little mental hump, my workout tonight was 1 x 150 warmup, 10 x 100 Free on 40 sec. rest, and a 400 M cooldown. I feel like for two short weeks I have made great improvements as far as my workouts go. The one major problem I am having is swallowing water while I swim…This probably sounds ridiculous, but I am pretty well balanced, my body is in a streamlined position, my legs are just below the surface, but over the course of my workout I seem to be swallowing water and it often makes me feel sick, or at least hinders my breathing a little. I just want to know what this could be from, and how, if there is a way, to fix it? Thank you very much…

Maybe you are thirsty?

When your face is in the water, exhale. Blow bubbles

For some reason I have always had a difficult time breathing out underwater and try to breath out and in when I should just be breathing in. You have any tips on when and how to breath out underwater. I know it is a stupid question, but I am a moron when it comes to swimming. Thanks

What I do is, take a full inhalation out of the water, as soon as my face goes back in, start breathing out with pursed lips and continue this sustained controlled exhale until the next time my face emerges.

When ever your head is moving exhale through your nose. So after your breath when your head is going back into the water, breath out a little. Then as your head turns to get the next breath, exhale.

I had mucho problems breathing last year. Now I don’t even think about it.

Keeping water out of your mouth is a good first step but the real problem is you are reflexively swallowing. Just because water gets in you mouth doesn’t mean you have to swallow it. You’re undoubtably doing it unconsiously so you neet to train yourself not to swallow.

I find visualizing the infant and toddler swim classes that use the pool is a great tool in this regard. . . . .

I had similar problems. I still need to consciously force myself to exhale while my face is down (I was trying to exhale and inhale while taking my breath).

I also got some good advice on turning my head to breath. If you think of turning your chin to your shoulder and taking a breath off the top of your shoulder, you will force yourself to keep your head down so you are breathing in the draft of your head, thus you are breathing air. If you turn your head so that it is facing too far forward, you are just breathing the water that is running past your head.

Good luck with it!

Count.

“IN, out, 2, 3, 4, IN, out, 2, 3, 4”. Breath out the entire time you are counting. Add or subtract numbers appropriate for your pacing. I usually get water in my mouth as well, you have to teach yourself not to swallow it. Pee in the pool the entire length, that should help.

Stand in the shallow end and practice putting your face in, blowing bubbles til all the air is out, turn your head to breathe (ear should stay in the water / side of face too), get a breath, more bubbles.

Basic swim skill, should help.

That is exactly how I learned, I also practiced bilateral breathing while doing it.
