I just had a question as to where is the hand supposed to enter the water after the recovery. In front of the Shoulder, in front of the head or as far ahead as possible?
There’s a debate on how critical this is, but I’ve learned that it should enter in line with the elbow of your leading arm.
I should also qualify that I’m no swim expert (but at least I’m telling you that).
i’ll give it a start.
stand in a doorway (where the door would be, but it’s open)
put your right shouder just touching the right side door jam.
put the fingertips of the right hand on the trim/moulding of the doorway.
bring arm up until upper arm is about 45* angle above horizontal.
bring elbow back until forearm makes 45* angle to the door trim.
there you go
or, between the head and full extension (but closer to the head) and in line with the outside edge of the shoulder, coming down at about a 45* angle.
yeah that would put it just in front of the head but not all the way out in front.
got it couldn’t understand it at first. But now i see it is 45 deg. and another 45 deg. and the hand is pretty much in front of the head but at the shoulder distance.
there is no “one” spot. I get to watch swimmers from former olympians to beginners every day at masters. It ranges from just inside the head (so inline with your ear) to just inside your shoulder. As long as you are not entering outside your shoulder or over the center line, most triathletes have bigger fish to fry when it comes to swimming.
As long as you’re using your core/shoulder/elbow correctly on recovery, and aren’t crossing over on entry, there is no one correct answer or sweet spot on this one. Get the shoulder/elbow positioning correct, and chances are you end up naturally with where your hand is supposed to go.
