Swim fatality at Alcatraz Challenge this morning

The link below is to the short article at the SF Chronicle’s web page:

It seems like the reporter was trying to go for the bad karma angle of the “Swim or die” slogan. As if that had anything to do with it.

Anyone there this morning to comment on conditions? I just got back from a ride and dang was it windy, drizzling, and cold. August in San Francisco.

The chop on the Bay can be very wicked.

That’s terrible, I bet they change the name for next year…

I did the race this morning. Using the last time as a comparison, the water wasn’t all that cold (about 60 degrees), the chop seemed a bit rough at times but the current didn’t appear to be all that strong. My time was 20 minutes slower though. So many factors, it’s hard to know what happened but it’s very sad.

Yikes, that’s terrible.

Condolences to her family and friends.

I was fortunate enough to get to know her a bit on recent work travels. She was a great person and dedicated swimmer. She had been looking forward to this race for quite a long time. Sad story, indeed.

That’s horrible. I heard the water was a bit rough. I swam at the AP and it was nice, not very cold at all. I ran past the AC awards ceremony after my swim, seemed pretty jovial. I had wanted to do thyis race but thought I was going to be out of State, by the time my plans changed it was sold out. It will be interesting to see what the cause of death was.

I talked to a person who is really good who did the race and said it was the toughest he has ever done.

Dave

Very sorry to hear.
