I am looking to make some big improvements in my swim times this year. I swam a snail pace 1:50 at Louisville this year. I’m looking for either a masters group or semi-private instruction. Whatever it takes to fix my horrible stroke, although I don’t have the money for private lessons. Any suggestions or recomendations? I live in the Ann Arbor Michigan area.
Masters at Mack 5 days a week. Don in the AM. Bethany in the PM. Both terrific coaches. Private lessons very affordable from at least two coaches, but PM me if you want details.
Do you know whether there is a per session drop-in rate, or are you required to register through parks and rec?
I’m planning on swimming a full season for the first time in about 20 years (since h.s.).
I only swim AM’s and Don will let you go a few times to make sure you want to be there. But then you need to pay up for the session, I think (pro rata). Just so you know, if you have breasts you’ll get a lot more coaching, so much you can probably skip any other lessons. If you’re a dude, however, I’d find one of the great local coaches and just get a few lessons.
Also, I know this’ll get trashed here on ST, but I learned a TON from TI swimming and it was the best $60 I’ve spent for triathlon. If you frequent the YMCA, I’m probably the only guy you’ll see there actually doing drills.
That’s funny. I have seen you doing drills at the Y. (And I remember you doing that indoor tri, as well.)
I also tend to think TI drills have real value and did quite a lot of them this summer. Good warmups before a “real” set.
The drills are excruciatingly boring, but provide great returns for the time spent. I’ve gone from bottom third swim splits in races to top third in the last few years, which then gives me a shot at keeping up with the good bikers. Of course, I promptly get dropped on the run, but that’s another problem altogether.
