Swim breathing question

I have my first sprint tri in july…I have been swimming for a couple of weeks…just learning on my own…my question is when you exhale underwater do you exhale threw your nose or mouth??? thanks

I do it thru both to get rid of the water that sometimes gets in my mouth while I take a breath!

As a beginner swimmer myself the best breathing tip I ever got was to hold the breath in your lungs for one stroke before exhaling. You’ll absorb more oxygen this way. Get in a rhythm, breathe, stroke, exhale, stroke, stroke, breathe…etc…

I found myself gettin into O2 debt very quickly before I started holding it in like this.

wow…I have been nose only exhaling and been getting some serious carbon dioxide levels “hyperventilating”…hmmmm I guess I’m stupid…never thought of exhaling thru my mouth underwater…even though if I only exhaled through my nose on a tough bike ride or run I’d die…maybe I should get a coach because I am a idiot…thanks

Both, but about 80% comes out of my mouth. During flip turns I exhale through my nose.
