Sweet Tivo Function (Remote Control Codes)

I have an older Quasar TV which I’m trying to control with a newer universal remote. I’ve entered all the Quasar TV codes listed in the instruction manual and still I can’t get the universal remote to work.

Does anyone know how to get a remote control code cross-reference table? What information is sent from the remote via the IR pulses? How does one manufacturer know what all other manufacturers’ codes are? Where’s the list? Perhaps code #0289 for a Magnavox TV will also work for my Quasar TV.

(In the universal remote manual, sometimes you’ll see the same code listed for multiple TVs.)

Surely someone out there has access to this information.

Does the universal remote have a “learn” feature? You can use the device’s original remote to program the new one.

Nah, not that sophisticated. It’s a TiVo remote.

If it’s a universal remote then it should have a scan function that will step through each code one at a time until you find the right one. It can take a while because you have to push the off button for each code and there are hundreds.

Did a google search and found:QUASAR:0038,0057,0087. It’s from a UK site so don’t know if it’ll work. TIVO IS AWESOME!

So I tried all the codes in the instruction manual, plus the codes from the UK site, plus a few codes I picked from TVs/remotes I thought were similar to mine. No joy.

Joy = call to Tivo customer service. If you can’t program your Tivo remote to work with your TV, follow the procedure below:

  1. Cover the transmitter with your hand, press Tivo and TV Power at the same time until the red LED stays on.
  2. Remove hand from transmitter window.
  3. Enter code 0999; the LED will flash three times.
  4. Point the remote at the TV & press the Channel Up button once every 2 seconds (not faster). This apparently tests thousands of codes.
  5. Once then TV turns off, press Enter to save the code.

Happy, happy, joy, joy !!!

If you can’t program your AV receiver either, follow the same process as above except press the Tivo & Mute buttons, use code 1999 and point the remote at the receiver.

Yep, that’s the procedure. I think I had to do that for about 15 - 20 minutes to find the code for my Techview TV. Don’t forget to write it down once you find it.
